If you are near to Fenchurch Street then you can get the train to Barking and then the tube to Dagenham. Getting to Fenchurch St from Brighton is a bit of a faff though so won't save you much time.

Brighton to East Croydon, Tram from EC to Elmers End, Train from Elmers End to Lewisham, DLR from Lewisham to Stratford and tube from there to Dagenham East. Probably not quicker though.

Yep. Much quicker than via Victoria.

OK here is a travel question, I am coming from Reading and a mate from East Croydon and we were going to meet at Fenchurch Street then change at Barking so would it be better to go London Bridge, West Ham then Dagenham East ?

Way out west
I am coming from Bristol - the recommended route from Paddington is Bakerloo to Oxford Circus, Central to Mile End and District to Dagenham East - about 45 minutes apparently.

Trouble with that is zero chance of meeting someone anywhere on the tube as no phone signal so needs to be a main line station

Go Fenchurch St to Barking as West Ham to Dagenham is tube all the way as opposed to overground

Paddington to London Bridge on the tube is quicker than Paddington to Tower Hill, if you can meet him at London Bridge I do that.

If all you want to do is meet up, I would recommend Dagenham East as the best place.

Alternatively, take the recommended tube route from Paddington (Bakerloo to Oxford Circus; Central to Mile End; then District line east) and meet up somewhere like West Ham (where the phones will work).

I think having agreed we will meet at Fenchurch Street will do that.

The District Line has to be the worst on the underground. Five minutes between stops sometimes; taking ages and from Mile End to Dagenham it's f***ing grim. At least they'll all be watching the cricket on Tuesday....until 5pm. Made the mistake of stopping in Barking for a few jars last season. The whole area including Dagenham is a shithole and Barnet ALWAYS lost there. :(

Barking is a toliet, literally, the is a large sewage works nearby the smell of which you can't miss when you step of the train.
