Such a sad story and the schools and social services seemingly aware for years of violence in the family and bruises and burns on thegirl. The biological mother seemingly an utter violent **** too. Gave me goosebumps and the chills to watch the little girl singing and playing the guitar.

This keeps happening, and yet our systems continue to fail to protect these poor children, and then we only find out about the disgusting instances where these poor souls end up dead so god knows how many thousands of other poor kids suffer this type of torture every day. How on earth a human being ends up evil enough to impose that horror on an innocent is another question altogether. Pure evil.

Child protection services need more funding. Austerity is the problem here.

That said, no safety net can be foolproof. There has always been child abusers and there will always be.

But the state can play a role in reducing the numbers by properly funding and regulating the systems in place.

This shouldn't just be a problem we think about when there's a high profile media story. Abuse is happening all the time.

School loops them in with their concern, and despite the history of these people, bounce it back to the school "can you monitor". Child is removed from school, no one left to monitor. That's just f***ing appalling

It is appalling.

But i think it's unlikely that this is because people working in the sector are generally negligent or indifferent.

The more professional people get stretched, the bigger the potential gaps get.

I also think that it's a profession that deals with degrees of risk. These are often hard to spot before but seem very obvious in hindsight. Maybe the wrong decisions were made even without hindsight, who knows. But you never hear of the majority of cases where the correct decisions are made.

Unless there is obvious negligence, i don't people should be hung out to dry

Had to switch off the radio news yesterday, just couldn't hear it, the pictures of that lovely smiling girl and what was happening to her in the background, beyond appalling and really upsetting.
