If you dont want all inclusive hotels, then avoid Varadero like the plague.

To be honest best off putting up with an All Inclusive hotel, but doing a multi centre trip including Havana- giving you the best of both worlds.

I've a feeling someone is going to say Guantanamo Bay looks nice, if a little primitive.

Nah, that's all inclusive- including orange uniform.

Havana- museum of the revolution with the Granma (tiny) and the golfing clothes they wore to fight in. Dont miss the Cristoph Colon cemetary. Bennie Morales' club (if it is still going).
Santiago de Cuba- if you want to dance (although be warned, you will look like a wanker. Cuban dancing would probably be banned in this country)
Get down to Trinidad if you can. faded elegance.
Escambray (sp) mountains.

AVOID VARADERO - at all costs

Just go, book a hotel in Havana for the first few nights
then and find your own way around.

I went about 4 years ago. I had a fantastic time.

I stayed in the house of a couple - sort of hostel type establishment, except it is a private home. I will see if I can dig out the address. Well placed in the city centre and the food is fantastic.

I took a train down to the South East coast and stayed in a great village called Baracoa. Not a huge amount to do there, but I made some friends with some local Cubans and they took me on a road trip.

La Isla de Juventad is worth a visit and they have a lot of historical things to visit - to do with the revolution and the prisons that held all the 'criminals'.

Trinidad is quite cool as well.

any1 been? where to go?

not into all inclusive hotels mind.

I would suggest that if you don't go All Inclusive - you don't bother going. Nothing to buy in local shops, and they have different money to outsiders.

If you do go AI, i'm sure you will love it. Be careful about the hotel's cooking though. Some hotel's is complete shite!

If you dont like 4 and 5 star All Inclusive then stay at Casa Particulares, this is where you stay with Cuban families, lonely planet have recommendations for every town, and BOF has a good one for Havana.

Don't miss Old Havana and Trinidad (I think the whole town is a unesco world heritage site)

Even Varadero has its advantages ( nice place to relax )although its not really Cuba, infact if you're Cuban you're not allowed to go there unless you work in one of the hotels. But hey, I like it

No, unfortunately not BOF as in the end, the company that I was working for gave me some complimentary accomodation. Earlier though, when I was looking for accommodation I did try and phone the number that you gave me, but I couldn't get through.

Not sure, but I think that they have a recommendation in the current Lonely Planet - (Havana Casa particulares section)

A truly beautiful country and I would even dare to suggest my all time favourite holiday destination.

Havana is a must, and just try to savour the blissful atmosphere of a lovely holiday destination unspoiled by lardy American tourists, not a McDonalds in sight, no Budweiser on the shelves and the local beer, Cristal or Buccaneero is delicious.

Enjoy!

Not been, but would be interested to know why it should be avoided. What's bad about it exactly?

It is a beach resort and you could be anywhere in the world. Cuba is a fascinating country and time spent at Varadero would be time wasted. I didn't go, but a friend of mine did and she said they had lovely swimming pools, they played tennis and had great food. :thud:

Castro began developing it about 15 years ago to fleece westerners of dollars, which he badly needed/needs. It could be any Carribean resort. I dont know if it is still true but Cubanos weren't allowed in unless they worked there.

It's a fantastic country with great people it would be a shame to waste time in Varadero.

See ifyou can seek out some Santerio worshippers and go to one of their (illegal) churches.

A bottle of whisky opens a lot of doors.

Went there 6 years ago on dual location hoilday...10 days on beach and 7 nights in Havana...Beach could be anywhere in Caribbean and they advise people not to go outside of the complexes...It was Ok for about 4 days then got bored with lying around listening to loud canadians.

Havana different story...excellent place. Make sure you employ a guide. ( I gave him $5 for a whole dayback when $ were the currency of choice) He took us to the best bars and eateries (peoples houses). Felt very safe there. Have a great time...will we smell the cigar smoke at the end of the season?
