I still remember the Maria Colwell case; in case anyone thinks that child abuse/murder is a new thing this was 1973. And in Brighton.

It was prevalent in the 50s and 60s too. I knew kids who had been preyed on and fortunately some of the culprits got caught. I was too young to know the outcome. One positive from the social media environment we have to live in today is that there is more chance that these people and their gross crimes being found out.

When I grew up kids were tought to be seen an not heard. Especially in the evening. Be quiet. The domestic space was definitely the adults' space. We had to go on the street or up the park to be free and alive.

When I moved to Canada in 82 I was immediately struck by what my boss there described as a 'child loving' society. Kids treated like humans. I thought at first this was over-indulgence. I found it offensive and almost pathetic. But the kids seemed happier than English kids. Nicer, less sneaky. Innocent.

When I moved back to England in 86 I was struck by the opposite; I remember kids being screamed at and slapped on the street and in supermarkets. It was really upsetting. It is only when you see a different way of doing things that you realise that your way may be wrong.

You see less of that these days, because our British values have changed. I definitely feel that in the 70s kids were viewed as the property of the parents, bound by the rules of home. I suspect that attitude is much less common these days. Thankfully.

I've been wary of contributing to this thread but feel incredibly strongly about it due to personal circumstances. I have found it extremely upsetting. Every situation where a child is suffering from neglect genuinely angers me. This is the extreme end of scale but when I consider the number of people suffering from childhood poverty and the stresses and strains that places on the emotional wellbeing of parents, it's hard to imagine a world without these sorts of things occurring. The money spent on social services in this country is appalling and I unfortunately have experience of seeing children go through life without the help they need despite the best intentions of those caring for them. Some of them are fighting incredibly hard to get the children who are damaged and vulnerable the support they need. It is this neglect and lack of support that is devastating and failing children and has the potential to turn them into dangerous adults.

In fact, you probably won't be surprised to read that nearly a quarter of those in prison have been through the social care system. That percentage increases significantly as you look at those under 25.
It's a disgrace.

Maybe just leave them in general population and let "natural justice " prevail?

Not saying violence deserves violence actually but they certainly deserve to live in fear for the rest of their lives.

God, that’s an awful story. I hadn’t heard of this. Imagine the horrific life the mum and son had with him. Terrible.

Another one, sweet little 5 year old Logan Mwangi murdered by his family, three cnts were sentenced today. This was the Welsh case where they then dumped his body in a river.

Racism may’ve played a part too (the step’father’’ was a member of the NF and wouldn’t call Logan by his name, instead using a racist term). Perhaps an aggravating factor in not valuing the kid as having any worth.

I've always been against the death penalty but, by god, these people test my resolve.
If, however, someone were to slot them in prison I'd not shed a tear.

Not a fan of the death penalty - but in cases like this, involving such horrible evil, torture and cruelty, and absolutely no possible shread of doubt - I'm wavering.

We must be getting close to knowing in advance those that should not be allowed to reproduce because of the likelihood of committing such crimes? There’s a horrible deja vu and pattern to these tragedies. An innocent kid dead and tens of millions spent to administer justice. Wasn’t so long ago you’d be hanged within 3 days of sentence passed. Excluding Sundays. Naturally…
