Ug, politics, manhole covers, referees and all that's wrong with the world. It does make NSC go round, I suppose. But what we all, well a few us, really need is another Test series. And indeed we have it.

It only feels like a couple of years ago that England toured Pakistan and New Zealand. But that may well be because it was.

Latest news from the England camp is that Jordan Cox, the non wicket keeper who was replacing the other non wicket keeper is injured. So he will be replaced by a non-non wicket keeper in the form of Ollie Pope. Perhaps we could try bowling non bowlers, although some might argue we have done exactly that in some departments recently. Meeoww.

Of course, all this is preparation for the quadrennial tonking down under which is only 12 months away. After all, that seems to be the only series that matters to the powers that be, but thankfully not us or indeed most of the England hopefuls.

England continue to bemuse, frustrate and sometimes delight in equal measure. And this series is hard to call. New Zealand's form has been pretty good over the last 5 years. The recent sreies defeats at home to Australia and away in Sri lanka were followed up by a Leicester City type result in India. This should make them favourites for this series.

But who cares ? It's bat 'n ball in its purest form. And we love it.

A little tale. 40 years ago, Sussex were playing a match at Hove and a school teacher of mine had a spare ticket and asked me if I fancied going along. Of course I did. My Dad worked for the sponsors and was happy to sanction it. Good job too as it was a school day.... In a clandestine way I met my teacher that morning so as not be discovered and sat there with him enjoying a pint in the pavilion. I was 15 and must have been the only kid ever to bunk off school with his teacher and his parents full permission. Well, cricket is more important than education, and obviously my teacher's job. Thankfully all was fine for all parties concerned.

This week I will kind of be bunking off work for the cricket again, but perhaps not quite. At present I have the luxury of working from home and note the hours the cricket distracts me then add them on in the evening. My boss is fine with it, unsurprisingly, as they are from Yorkshire. Cricket seems to bring much luck in this respect. No surprise really. It's God's own game.

Happy Series Folks

Nevertheless, planning for that moonshot has been affected by the news that Jofra Archer – supposedly targeting a red-ball return – will start next summer at the Indian Premier League after securing a £1.4m deal in Sunday’s auction.

Unlike Stokes, who opted out of it to focus on England, Archer is believed to have been swayed by the new IPL rule that states players who did not put their name forward would be frozen out for three years. For an injury-blighted fast bowler, the desire to keep this avenue open is understandable, even if England, who have paid for his lengthy rehabilitation periods, could also be forgiven for feeling put out.
Has to take the money but surely he needs to play for Sussex in the CC next season at some point. IPL ends at the end of May so we might not get to see Seales, Robinson and Archer in the same attack which will be a shame.

I expect they'll give him a runout in a 2nd XI game or something if they want him to bowl more than 10 overs and the county championship fixtures don't align.

On which subject, the championship fixtures are meant to be announced tomorrow.

Archer seems to have made a lot of money from a cricket career in which he doesn't seem to have played a lot of cricket.

Also known as Sam Billings Syndrome. :lolol:

At least Archer's put in some match and tournament winning performances to justify people investing the time (and money) in him. And he's been injured rather than just picked in squads to carry drinks around instead of playing actual matches.
