some of the comments about bad drivers and appropriating blame have made me want to point out somthing that you should all write about to your MP, Council, Highways agency, Police force, etc.

Regardless of the speed of the vehicle, it should not have been able to cross the central reservation. even if your going 100mph, the barriers should deflect you back into the road, as hitting another car thats going 60-70 is going to be alot less harsh than head on. I hope this is whats addressed in the inevitable investigation.

That's a very valid point about the crash barriers.

In many other countries they use concrete barriers that are designed to prevent cars flipping over or going over the thing, something in the shape keeps a car upright and in the carriageway it is travelling in.

Doesn't detract from an horrendous crash though in which a number of innocent people have either lost their lives or had their lives forever changed.

While all of this tragedy was happening there were 2000+ of us at Swindon, blissfully unaware of what had happened and thinking a goal against us would be the end of the world.

My thoughts go out to all of those people involved.

Good work Marshy, respect to anyone who does anything like that, not always a pleasant job I'm sure.

it still baffles me how cars get over the barriers, I've seen people fall asleep on motorways and hit barriers, generally they just bounce about and smash the car up . . .then walk away with their pants full, to cause this much carnage must have been something pretty extreme from the driver, obviously not in proper control of the vehicle and/or inexperienced at high speed driving

After hearing the reports this morning, I left for work late to allow the traffic to disperse, as I gather they reopened it at about 8.15, and had a clear run. Driving past the site of the accident was grim - lots of long stretches of tyre-marks immediately prior to the scene of the accident itself, where the road has been scrubbed and sanded in places. There were also tyre-marks after the crash area, where people have presumably seen what just happened behind them and hastily pulled over to stop and help.

Very sobering, and puts a lot of things in perspective.
