At least six people have been killed in a road accident just north of Brighton.
The accident involved several vehicles on the A23, close to the junction of the A27 on the northbound carriageway.
A four-year-old, a woman in her 20s and a man in his 30s were said to be in a serious condition and taken to several hospitals in Brighton.
It was not clear whether the sixth victim was among them. A number of other people suffered minor injuries.
Traffic at standstill
A Sussex Police spokesman described the scene as "one of some carnage".
At least four or five vehicles were involved, he said.
Fire crews, six ambulances and police rushed to the scene, between Patcham and Pyecombe.
The accident, already declared a major incident, happened just before 1630.

Chaos is also reported south of the accident on the A27.

A senior paramedic at the scene had said it was "one of the most horrific incidents he had attended", she added.
The ambulance service is offering counselling to witnesses, some of whom had tried to resuscitate victims, the spokeswoman said.
"We are concerned that they may have been affected by what they have seen," she added.
A Sussex Police spokesman said the road would probably remain closed throughout Sunday night.

As I was heading to Hove Station(via the old Goldstone Ground site) stright after the match. I saw quite a few Fire Engines heading up and down Old Shoreham Road. Are they anything to do with the accident?

sounds dreadful although I cant see how there could of been a serious crash there unless someone flipped accross the road

I live in Brighton and work in Crawley so something like this really hits home,its normally Handcross Hill but something like this freaks me out

Same here. Last week someone had a tyre blow-out right in front of me on the A23 and swerved all over the shop at about 70mph. Could have driven me straight into the central reservation if I'd been about 20 feet further forward. That's why I hate driving and took the train even through the engineering works today! That and this

I was there just after it happened.
Flew back to Heathrow from Berlin this afternoon, then headed back home trying to make the 4pm start of the albion match on Sky, but was running 30 mins late.
As we came down the A23 past Hickstead, I noticed some dust clouds sprout up in the opposite lane. This was followed by a short sharp plume of smoke. The cars in front of us were slowing down rapidly, so I told the gf to take the slip road that goes by the old chalk mine on the left to avoid what I thought was probably some traffic watching a car fire of some sort.
Then suddenly the cars were screeching to a halt and we were out of their way. I looked over to my right, and was totally aghast at what I saw. Three cars shunted in half, and two, so completely destroyed (and burnt out) I couldn't even make out what they were. And then I saw something that will stay with me forever to be honest. I told the gf not to look right, but unfortunately, she did. Skip this paragraph if you are squeamish. We saw a pair of legs in the road crumpled under a torso, a body screwed in a ball and a child that looked like it had been incinerated.
There were about 10 cars on our side that had slowed down - mainly because of the carnage and debris on our side. It appears one of the cars had disintegrated through the barrier and the debris was stuff like engine parts, seats etc - not just lights and body panels. One of the vehicles was still burning and some of the passengers 20 or so cars behind it on the Northbound were running towards it with personal fire extinguishers trying to put it out. The people inside though were completely dead though - some of the people going to put out the fire were turning away in disgust. Some people were running in the opposite direction - I assume to get a mobile signal as it's the 'dead spot' just after the Texaco garage. On our side, it looked like people had flagged down a flatbed to try and move one of the cars - I assume they were worried someone was under one - but the driver was stood stock still, in shock. I can only assume he saw up close what we saw from 15m or so away.
Some people were taking photos, which I'm still not sure is sick or not. It had all happened about 2 minutes before we got there, and what struck me was that the carnage was all about 30 metres apart, no more. It must have been a high speed crash because the damage was phenomenal, but I think they must have hit something stationary becuase it was all in such a small area.
It was over 6 minutes before a fire engine started heading there, and over 10 before an ambulance, which was pretty shocking. Hopefully the 4 year old who looked completely gone will survive, but is critical.
Me and the gf both felt quite sick, this is the worst thing we've ever seen on the roads after 14 years and I can only extend enormous sympathies to the families of those involved.
On a side note (and comparitively immaterial) the A23 is completely shut in both ways and people should avoid it at all costs.

Not sure if its connected but I was coming back to Brighton from Lewes at 11-15pm & the A27 west bound was closed from the 1st roundabout. I had to go via Kingston & Newhaven.
