I don't know anythbing about these things but I am led to believe that songs can get to number 1 by only selling about 20,000 copies or something.

On that basis, could that Tom Hark song make it to the top if we all buy a couple of copies each and get our mates to? Or does it have to be released properly on a national scale?

It's not going to be No. 1 as it was released at the wrong time IMHO to get maximum exposure. The Xmas period is by far the best time for selling records. Especially when you consider the Band Aid record it is up against.

If it had been released in the new year around Feb then it may have got in the top 10.

Surley it would be higher than the highest selling cd so if it only sells 5000, and no other cd beats it then it will be first? but im not sure either:shrug:

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
He does have a MINOR point (although I am not sure he realises it) The Band Aid single may be number one well into Januray, especially if they announce another Live Aid type thing for the summer which will keep the single in the spotlight.

So, in answer to my question, it is not inconceivable that Tom Hark could be number one. I didn't know if Atilla had to complete some special form or something for it to be considered in the 'Hit Parade'.

That would be quite cool, even if it got in the top 10 or 20 becaise people would hear it and Southern FM would be obliged to play it along with other radio stations.

That's why I said Feb rather than Jan. People who get money for Xmas must spend some of it on CDs pushing the sales up for the month. I think the Band Aid thing is one off and we're unlucky to coinside with it. But I stand by my statement that is should be released in Feb.

The :dunce: I gave myself was for thinking it was going to be released in Dec.

Will we need to sell about 30000 copies to get to number 1 in the first week of January going on previous years sales. However sales of about 10000 will put us in the top 10.

Single sales for the first week in Jan are normally low. So with plenty of people going into town for the Jan sales, if Virgin and HMV have decent stocks and promote the single well it could make all the difference. I hope someone from the club/record company will have a word with the managers of HMV and Virgin in Brighton to make sure the single is promoted to maximum effect for that week.
