Counting the pennies

Hither (sometimes Thither)
I went to the bank today to put into my account £24 of ones and twos, £30 of fives and a tenner of twenty-pence-pieces. I only starting on the twenties about two weeks ago, and the other little coins about 9 years ago.
I don't think i'll do it again as it took me about 4 hours to count and bag. I doubt the homeless would have quite appreciated a rucksack the weight of 3 babies to waste their desparate-for-housing time with. Alcoholics, on the other hand...

Anyone else have a large collection of shrapnel they can't be bothered to number and bank?

Those counters in supermarkets are useful, as they sort everything for you in one go (and even chuck out the washers, old lira etc). Ok I seem to remember you maybe pay a v small commission and you have to spend the voucher in the store or donate to a charity, but still pretty straightforward.

They charge about 9% commission , plus you dont need to spend it instore as it can be changed for cash at the customer service desk.

Yup that's the case at Sainsbury's. Had plenty of people when I worked there either cash it in or spend it on a chocolate bar and get the rest in change.

There's one of those Coinstar machines in the lobby of my credit union, who rebates the commission if you deposit the proceeds from the count with them. In supermarkets 7% and 9% are customary rake-offs.

I have three of the large coffee cans ready to go this week. The US penny is worth about 0.65p at this point, and they're useless to use for a purchase.

I've got a scrumpy jack bottle that holds all the silver and £1/£2 coins, think the most I got one year was £250ish. Gonna be doing it again in early August to help fund the beer for my holiday!

I've got an old sweet jar which i chuck all my odd change in at the end of every week.
I'm going to get it changed up before i go on holiday for a bit of extra cash.

I have coppers from about 6 years which will probably come to about £30 - I keep meaning to take it to the coinstar - will cover the commission with proper coins!

I keep meaning to start a collection of 5ps as the little fuckers are tiny and always end up all over the place.

2 of those metal tins that JD bottles come in at xmas full of all coins under 50p's. Last time I emptied just one of them there was best part of £150 in it so fingers crossed for £250 to £300 for the both. Just gotta find the time to actually go on holiday to spend it now....

Every year for christmas I get an unopenable money tin, and put my 1ps, 2ps, 5ps, 10ps, 20ps and 50ps in it, then late october/early november I cash it in and use it for christmas shopping. Two years ago I also put in £1 when I had ore than 10 of them, and all my £2 and had that year I paid in over £200.

I actually find the counting and sorting and bagging very therapeutic.

Interesting, you all save your loose stuff for YOURSELVES !!
I put all my loose change in a Diabetes UK collector/jar and pass this over to their stand down at the local specsavers where they give me a new empty one. Am I too soft? Or too rich?
