Council statement supports Falmer

press release 27 July 2004
Falmer inquiry to re-open
Deputy prime minister John Prescott has asked for part of the public inquiry into Falmer stadium to be re-opened.

While not ruling Falmer out, he wants seven 'alternative' sites to be re-examined. These are the area around Brighton Station, Brighton Greyhound Stadium, Shoreham Harbour, Sheepcote Valley, Toad's Hole Valley, Waterhall and Withdean Stadium. He wants these tested against various criteria including development costs, chances of acquiring the site, transport and enviromental impact.

The Planning Inspectorate is yet to set a date for the inquiry to re-convene.

Council leader Ken Bodfish has responded by saying: "It's clearly not over and it's a brave decision by Mr Prescott to challenge the conclusions of the inspector. At the inquiry the club and the council exhaustively spelled out the problems with all alternative sites. But if we have to do it all again to convince Mr Prescott that Falmer is the only viable option, then we're happy to do so.

"All alternative sites have serious problems. By contrast Falmer meets all the criteria he lists."

Good.

A statement that would have been approved by the Chief Planning Officer, the Chief Executive and from a Political Advisor.

I know the head of Planning at the Council - he was the one on the left on South Today when Bodfish was reading the letter.

I used to play footy with him and is a Hammers fan (he is from that neck of the woods originally). As a genuine football person I'm sure he will be doing all he can to help us!

This is why we are going to win. That list of criteria he set out couldn't have been better written by Paul Samrah.

Now we are going to win - and there is going to be massive publicity EXPLAINING EXACTLY WHY Falmer is the best site of all those listed. Now if we can just avoid relegation this is going to be the greatest season in the club's history.

couldn't they make ALL the other sites COMPLETELY unavailable by giving the land to other developments?

Brighton station is ruled out as work has started already
