Canned chanting at new football stadium

A new sound system has been installed at a football stadium built for next year's European Championships to give out canned chants.

Developers of the new Letzigrund stadium in Zurich took the step after discovered that real crowd noises were disappearing into thin air.

The stadium opened just over a month ago but after hosting a few games for local club FC Zurich, stadium managers noticed that the acoustics in the stadium were terrible.

Fans complained their chants could not be heard around the stadium and that announcements over the PA system were barely audible.

Local media slammed the entire stadium as "lacking atmosphere" and demanded action.

Stadium managers installed the new sound system with 20 huge speakers dotted around the ground to give off sounds of cheering fans.

But the move has also been slammed by critics.

"It is a deception that we don't need," said president of the fan club Letzi, Marcel Hofstetter.

Even players have waded in with criticism. FC Zurich defender Marc Schneider said: "It is total deceit and completely off the mark."

Whilst this is clearly a BRILLIANT idea, if they were trying to make it sound like there were more Brighton fans there, they'd need to introduce canned MOANING rather than cheering, surely?

I was wondering how long it would be before artificiality in football would extend to this sort of thing.

What a load of old bollocks.

Did we not discuss this exact thing on Tuesday :D:D:D and agreed it was a poop idea, but might just work!!!

:lolol:

It works at Sevilla - and ratchets up an already lively atmosphere. The recorded music comes out of the noisy end behind the goal - and isn't played through the main stadium PA system.
