He couldn't be much worse than what we have at the moment could he? And what's with the Irish guy. Only young and only here until the end of the season. If he doesn't look good enough in training to get into our midfield you have to wonder what he's doing here.

A club with our financial capabilities has to take risks sometimes with players. Sometimes they come off, and sometimes they don't, but we can't expect every free transfer or cheap signing we make to come in and make an impact. McFaul was billed from the start as a prospect, so lets give him some time to develop and see come the end of the season eh?

As for Mayo - no way. He's far too slow and we've got plenty of holding midfielders, it's the creativity we need.

The simple answer to your question is no i'm afraid.

I think that El-Abd has provided good cover in the middle of the park. Whatever people say about El-Abd, I think he has been a vital member of the team this season.

No.

We don't need ANOTHER defensive midfield player. We need one who is going to drive the game forward, get ahead of the ball and make runs into the box.

We need ATTACKING midfielders, we were caught too many times with a massive gap between El Abd / Thomson and Murray/Forster

Thomson is great at picking out passes, so if he could get 10 yards further forward he could put the balls in the channels along the deck that Forster thrives on.

Mayo, couldnt do the job, no

That Hammond kiddie at Colchester could do a job

Lol! Kinky, you stirrer! I was a little unsure why Mayo came on last night, as the last thing we needed was another defensive midfielder on the pitch, irrespective of whether he was up to getting on or not. I loved the roar at Gary Hart when he warmed up on the sidelines! Gaaaary Gaaaaaary Gaaaaary Hart!

I'm led to believe the 'Irish Lad' as he's referred to here, isn't quite ready to start yet, but is good enough to be a sub in case of emergency (which, to be honest, with the list of injuries - I nearly got to be last night!)
I'd have liked us to take a couple more chances last night. You might risk being caught on the break, but hey, life's short!

Oh, and I bumped into 'Tom' Martot and he says he's doing well and expects to be back soon - or maybe he was telling me about his cat's diet. My French isn't THAT good.

However, Tommy Frazer's French is marvellous, and he's taught David all sorts of interesting English phrases, and David calls him 'Fraise' which doesn't refer to his name, but the flame coloured mop of hair on his head!!
I find out interesting stuff me, eh? ........ :)

Well it was kinda irrelevent making any sort of change at that stage of the game, so I don't think it really mattered who came on.

He did do in the last five minutes something the central midfield had failed to do for the previous 85 mins, and have a go on goal. In fact I think it was the first time our central midfield got into the opponents box.

Mayo is a midfielder who has been used for a long time as a full back. He's not afraid to go forward, can tackle and his lack of pace is less of a problem than at left back. The answer to the original question is yes, Mayo can do a job in midfield and has in the past.

Also, I thought the only reason McFaul hasn't been playing is simply that he is nowhere near match fit and he's on the bench as cover/experience?

No, he can't do a job in midfield. He's only played for 10-odd years, how many matches do you need to see?
