WHEN Carl Cort came on as a substitute in the 79th minute for Brentford , he became one of the most expensive footballers to play against The Albion in a League fixture.

In an era where money seems to dominate football, we have dug deep to take a look at the most expensive players to feature against The Albion in League fixtures. The rules are that the transfer fee(s) must be paid for the player before they played against Brighton:

Teddy Sheringham made a career for himself at the highest level, but he was in The Championship when he played at Withdean for Portsmouth. Sheringham joined Nottingham Forest for £2million in 1991, before being sold to Tottenham Hotspurs for £2.1million. Manchester United then paid £3.5million for him before he joined Portsmouth on a free after a second spell at Spurs.
Total transfer fees of £7.6million

Carl Cort cost Bobby Robson and Newcastle United £7million when he joined from Wimbledon. He was then sold to Wolverhampton Wanderers for £2million. Cort then joined a host of other clubs on free transfers and loans, before finding his way to Brentford.
Total transfer fees of £9million.

In the same Portsmouth team as Teddy Sheringham, was Paul Merson. The Arsenal youth team product left The Gunners for Middlsebrough in 1997 for £4.5million, before Aston Villa took him off their hands for £6.75million. He joined Portsmouth on a free transfer after his release from Villa.
Total transfer fees of £11.25million.

Ade Akinbiyi :lol:made an instant impact for Brighton in the Goldstone days as a youngster scoring 4 in 7 whilst on loan from Norwich City. He was sold to Gillingham for £250,000, before his move to Bristol City for £1.2million. After just one season, Wolves paid £3.5million for the striker, before convincing Leicester City to part with £5million for his services. Crystal Palace then got him for a knockdown price of £2.2million where he then went on loan to Stoke and subsequently scored at Withdean.
Total transfer fees of £12.15million.
(note he moved to Burnley and Sheffield United after to take his total transfer fees up to £15.25million):US:

Dietmar Hamann turned out for MK Dons. Newcastle paid £5.5million for the German when he joined from Bayern Munich. Liverpool then paid £8million for his services, before he was released and joined Bolton Wanderers. Bolton then made a small profit, when they sold him to Manchester City for £400,000.
Total transfer fees of £13.9million.

The title of most expensive player to ever play against Brighton goes to a certain Mr Nick Barmby. He left Tottenham for Middlesbrough for £5.25million. Everton paid £5.75million for him in 1996, before he switched to the red side of the city, joining Liverpool for £6million. Leeds paid £2.75million for him 2002, before he eventually made his way to Hull on a free transfer which is when he graced Withdean Stadium with his rather expensive feet.
Total transfer fees of £19.75million.

The players who have played against Brighton and gone on to demand huge transfer fees is quite impressive too. Three players have broken the £30million barrier - James Milner, Jermaine Defoe and the most expensive player of them all, Peter Crouch at £33million

Brington
Jo, Man City. Wasn't he £18 million pounds worth or something like that!

Indeed, £18million seems to be a generally agreed valuation, but officially he is "fee undisclosed" .

Bollox to that - add him to the list of expensive overpaid crap

Sheringham played at Withdean for West Ham not Portsmouth.

John Utaka (of Portsmouth fame). Signed for around £7m. Before that was bought for around £4m. Think Portsmouth have sold him now, so probably got a few more mill for him.

It's not about "worth" (which is a nebulous concept) but about hard cash shelled out. ( seem to recall we once valued Les Berry as being worth £60,000! - he wasn;t worth sixpence!)

Oh and Gareth Barry never played at any level for us - only attended a centre of excellence -

I saw him playing for Spurs reserves against Brighton reserves at Worthing, Albion were on a run of quite a few games unbeaten. Spurs also had an Egyptian/ North African midfielder who'd cost over a million but was useless, we lost. This was at least 10 years ago possibly more. Does that count?

When I was saying worth, I was talking about "hard cash shelled out", I just couldn't be bothered to add up the totals of multiple transfers.
