Corners

12 corners last night (they had 3). Not being at the game, I hear absolutely nothing came from any of them...

Who was taking them?
Shit corners?
Not beating first man?
Too close to the keeper?
No movements in the box?
No one bothering to jump?
Defense too good?
Etc.

To have 12, and not even have a decent effort (let alone on target) is poor. I hope they will be working on corners (and set-pieces in general) in training this week.

Bennett. They weren't too bad actually, not of the Dean "I can't hit it over the first man" Cox standard anyway.

Was very much half and half some hit the front man and some were very good just begging for someone to put them in the net. If he was able to pick out a bloke inch perfect every time from a corner/cross then Bennett wouldn't be playing here

I read a piece in When Saturday Comes about 4 years ago which summised that corners are the most overrated set piece in soccerball. Statistically, goals rarely come directly from a corner.

The only way you're ever going to score from a corner is if the opposition defence isn't doing it's job properly.

Which reminds me, how many have we conceded from corners this season?

Poor corners from Bennett a lot of the time last night. I'm getting the impression that Bennett is a real confidence player and when we start playing better and getting him on the ball he'll be playing a whole lot better including his set pieces.

Bennett was terrible with all his corners, apart from one where Tunnicliffe scored.

I dont know why we dont make our centre backs take the corners as they are the only ones we can guarantee will clear the first man as all they do is kick it really high and long for no reason.

12 corners and only 2 shots on goal. We might as well just let them have a goal kicks! Just like we give teams that come to Withdean 3 points! That was Charlton's 1st away win in 9 games.... :shootself:

There were a few good ones last night - the one when Tunni hit the bar, plus also in the second half where he had a free header from six yards but only glanced it.

On the whole though, I reckon that over the last three years we've CONCEDED as many goals from OUR corners as we've scored.

Interesting, but sounds like it was written from a defenders viewpoint. In pretty much ANY goal you can find some kind of defensive fault if you want to.
I think too much is made of the corners that aren't good. I'd say Bennett was about 50/50 yesterday, Cox is not much different truth be told, but even if you watch Premiership games you see corners that are easily headed away or don't clear the near post.

Apart from the first one they were all shit!!!!

Even the one that hit the bar and DIDNT go in it still should have been cleared by the first man!

If I can take a corner and get it over the first man why cant a PRO footballer?

I thaught it might just have been Cox with the problem but Bennett cant do it either!

I've actually found the article on-line:

When Saturday Comes - The Half Decent Football Magazine - Corners

Consequently, I can't get worked up about crap corner delivery. I'd rather Poyet spent the time trying to teach our team how to defend, rather than score from corners.

Personally I can't believe how many corners (Whether taken by Cox OR Bennett) don't get pastthe first man!

What do they practice all day?

Bennett has got worse and worse since he arrived, unfortunately. He'll pick up, though I always get the feeling he really just isn't strong enough. Anyone know how tall he is?
