The reality is all capital is tied up in the Falmer project, the injection of cash was welcome and DK thought he has appointed 3 good managers in recent years, he could do it again, pay him under 100k, that leaves 200k to keep things ticking over.
I think that you have got things spot on Uncle B.
Lets face it we are in a financial mess thanks to the nimbys and the huge legal fees. Basically who cares if Coppell is a good guy or not. Our real enemies are the Falmer mob and that rsole Norman Baker. Dick Knight did well to get a quarter million for Coppell.

There has been the rumour that Coppell did not really want to go and that the club liked the idea of getting some compensation from Reading more than retaining the manager.
Really!! I dont believe it!

. Taylor merely reaped the rewards of the seed that Adams sowed, and then buggered off less a few months later.

Very harsh on Taylor, he took over a team in October that was not in a promotion position and took them up as Champions without spending any money. He was very shrewd tactically, and although the football was not always sparkling, it certainly got results and a nice big trophy at the end of the season.

He left immediately his contract ended, with no job to go to, because he was unhappy with the budget offered for the next season. He could have carried on for a month or two picking up easy money but did what he felt was right, giving the club ample time to recruit a replacement. DK made his biggest cock up as chairman that summer, and we all suffered

I can go along with the 2nd paragraph El P, in so far as at least PT didn't "umm" and "errr" for months on end before deciding to run away, and that was a redeeming feature. At least he didn't piss us about.

As far as getting promotion - there's no two ways about it, he did it with Micky Adams's team. I acknowledge that PT kept the ship steady where lesser managers could have ballsed it up completely, and I'm not for one minute saying that PT did a bad job while he was here. But he lost my respect completely by simply running away from the challenge. Coppell came in and, with just 2 or 3 signings, came within 2 results of keeping us in D1 on the final day, so the squad clearly wasn't that far short of surviving in D1.

PT wouldn't even give it a go ! And thats why I have very little respect for the man.

Taylor won us the 2nd Div title - you can't forget that. When he took over we weren't top.
What did he do when he came here:
1. Didn't sign a contract and was prepared to leave that until the end of the season.
2. Spent no money.
3. Left quickly after the negotiations with DK didn't give him a big enough budget for the playing staff.

If you negotiate for a job and aren't given the tools you think you need, you dont' take it - I dont' have a problem with that.

DK had the whole summer to get someone else in and ballsed up with Hinshelwood. Whether PT could have kept us up or not, I'm not sure, but I don't have any animosity to the guy. He never left us in the shit; he was just being honest to himself.

OK, he may have made some mistakes in the past with his signings, but everyone does.
MA signed some donkeys (did he sign David Lee, Geoff Pitcher?)
Coppell brought in Henderson on loan, and extended it.
Look at A.Ferguson and Veron.

I think we've been spoilt by quality managers over the last few years (excluding Hinshelwood), and we should accept that to them it's a job.

Fuuny that I have never thought of comparing PT with MM. Both took over in the autumn. Look where we were/finished and look where we are now??? ???

Or am I being too critical?

another view re PT,

albion gave him a chance after he totally cocked it up at leicester -his reputation wasnt exactly glowing when he came to us.

He won promotion with MA's team, which he thought would redeem his reputation, and then allow him the chance to manage a bigger club.

was it not rumoured that after Hinshlewood got the boot he was saying that he would be interested in coming back?

It's a shame you guys weren't all with me when Mr Madejski walked right past at Selhurst on Saturday. Unfortunately my Albion shirt was still being well under cover at that point, so no chance to make him squirm.

I'm sure you could have found a few kind words for him....

Just how true is this "Taylor cocked up Leicester?" which seems to be portrayed as fact now?

He took Leicester to the top of the Premiership, briefly, the previous season. When he got the boot they were down in the relegation zone and only 6 games into the season.

OK he spent a few bob and Akinbiyi turned out to be be a £7m flop. What is conveniently forgotten is that the transfer fees were completely mad at that time. Did Leicester spend any more than the other lower Premiership teams that season?

Leicester were run by the same people who took them into administartion and conveniently blamed Taylor for all their problems. They also sold the club to MA with a string of half truths about their finances. In fact it appears that he felt he had been conned by them and wouldn't have gone there if he'd known the truth

Adams has been there two years, and given that they played the going into admin card to alleviate their debts, how much better off in the league are they than when Taylor was sacked ??

Leicester went on a really bad in the second half of the season before. tho i dont believe anyone should be sacked after 6 games.

MA took them back up the following season.

In the clear cold light of day it's hard to say that Taylor did anything wrong. Unlike the legendary M. Adams and the very popular S. Coppell he didn't walk out mid contract.

Regardless of whether he did anything wrong I was still glad to see the back of Taylor as I never took to him.Despite early reservations about Coppell I have to admit that I warmed to him and thought he would stay for a while-shows how wrong you can be.Now I can't stand the hypocritical bastard.

I posted on here the day SC went that at no point in the 2 weeks up to SC leaving us did DK make any attempt to keep Coppell, and all he was interested in was the compensation money, and that is a fact as I said at the time and nearly everyone on here slagged me off,now a few months down the line it seems people are seeing the light at last.

If we had SC here now we would be in the top two instead of floundering around in a play off spot
