I like cooking programmes.

The others I don't watch, so it doesn't really affect me. Perhaps thats the solution.

ordinary cooking programmes are fine.. its the "treat them like schoolkids and talk to them like they were a piece of shit " Cookery shows like Masterchef and Ramseys swearathons that I object to

Cooking shows like Britains Best Meal that the winner was decided by viewers votes is ridiculous as I didnt get the chance to sample the food and I doubt if anybody else did. I believe that in the likes of X factor, strictly come dancing etc more emphasis and points should be given by the judges who are experts and know what to look for as opposed to the viewers who vote on the popularity of the star, in the majority of cases. as per John Sergeant,

Just watched Scrictly Come Dancing results show and must say that it is a complete waste of money having the judges on there because it apperars that the viewing public do nbot listen to the experts when they vote the likes of John Sergeant through who is absolutely awful.

Relying on the judgement of 20 million morons is a very dangerous game. You will always get support for an underdog even if it undermines the credibility of the show. Wasn't it the first series of ' Strictly ' when Christopher somebody of Eastenders, who couldn't put one foot in front of another, reached the final ( no doubt having 10 mill young girls voting for him )
It is the voting public who hold all the aces - all the judges do is give pointers whilst those of us with any sense have to put up with the likes of John Sergeant carried on a tide of public sympathy.
p.s Didn't one of the favourites go out of the X Factor last night as the public continue to vote for a choirboy, a 38 yr old widower and a Spaniard with a chest like the gunship Ptoemkin.

I've never watched Strictly Come Dancing but I have a rough idea of how it works and all these people whinging about John Sargeant getting through seem to be missing the point as far as I can tell.

I'm assuming that unlike X Factor the winner doesn't receive a professional contract or any money, being as it's a celebrity show and those so-called stars involved shouldn't need the promise of extra riches, it's all about the publicity for them. In which case what does it matter who wins? Clearly it's simply a popularity contest and if one "star" does enough to win over the British public despite perhaps not being the most naturally gifted at the challenge in question (in this instance ballroom dancing) what difference does it make?

You're not voting for someone to front the National Ballet. It's just a TV show.

And at any rate, the same thing has happened to X Factor/Pop Idol with the Rik Waller debacle. Fat, fairly talentless no hope wins the contest due to a combination of sympathy, popularity and internet chain mails encouraging people to screw things up for the show.

He wins the show and promptly disappears without trace as nobody actually wants to buy his records or have to see him.

SO WHAT?

If he's taken the place of somebody GENUINELY deserving of a record contract then surely they'll be offered one anyway, as has happened on many occasion before.

I occasionally watch X Factor in the absence of anythign better to do, just for the circus of it all. I've no interest in who wins or loses, and don't like the music anyway, but it is an entertaining format, scripted in places.

However I will agree that there are far too many examples of the same format across the channels, and some of them really are scraping the barrel now.

The idea that the public can vote for the winner of a cookery programme is entirely laughable

They will continue to be made because theydon't need writers or directors. Just producers and idiotic members of teh public / fading celebrities. They became extremely prolific in the mid nineties when the American Screenwriters Guild went on strike. To fill the schedule they came up with Jerry Springer and a host of other reality progs. England then copied the US because they seemed successful. So in a paradox you can thank scriptwriters for the awful shite on telly.

I tend to agree that the X factor messages should go in another section (and I contribute to them - a willing participant in the charade).

If it was right for Big Brother then it's right for X factor. Makes sense.

My Mrs watches strictly. I have got into it because of John Sergeant. I think its hilarious that he gets through. I appeal to everyone on here. Lets create anarchy and vote for him. That should really mess up this awful programme

oops, you've gone and fallen for it, by voting or even suggesting voting for one or another you encourage this rubbish. Just say nothing and ignore it....deprive them of the Oxygen of publicity and it will wither
