It must have been so hard for fellow aristocrat Olivia Henson to decide to leave behind her independent life as a Senior Account Manager and marry the Duke.

But, they're in love.

It's great to see two hardworking young people get together. Let's hope they enjoy their first home together and that they live long and happy lives.

And William was there too. How lovely for them.

I bear them no malice. A young couple, it isn’t a Rupert Murdoch scenario.

They made their wealth by owning a swathe of Belgravia from centuries ago.

In recent times he invested £1b of his money in transforming Liverpool city centre. He’d have gained a far higher return in London, Manhattan or Monaco.

Congratulations to the Duke and new Duchess, by all accounts many thousands in Chester today to be part of history and wish them well.

He did no such thing- he was 17 when Liverpool One opened in 2008- it was his father!

I assume that if you were in his position you'd just hand over that money to charity ?

He avoided inheritance tax because his estate was put into a trust. News reports at the time said that had he had to pay it then it apparently would have equalled the entire amount the government gets from death duty in most years. He probably could have paid it and still recouped it pretty quickly - he'd still have had 9 billion left to invest or do whatever he wanted with. William should have done the patriotic thing and boycotted the wedding because of the number of his subjects whose lives would have been improved without that avoidance.

The UK and NSC did all this in 2019. Magic Grandpa was on a ticket of various ways at getting at the wealthy and got destroyed at the ballot box.

These NSC pile on's, including folk sitting on a ton of equity (remember property is theft) and pension/ISA provision, are simply unrepresentative of the nation as a whole. This isn't Wilson 1964 to 1970 where he set about destroying old and new money in a class war. Aside from these little echo chambers, there's far more of an appetite for a measured wealth tax. Although in light of the conservative nature of UK voters, even Reeves hasn't mentioned that.

A wealth tax, closing all tax advantageous offshore arrangements, a huge clampdown on the UK annual tax gap of £36b (mostly SME's btw) ... then we'll get somewhere.

Of course I'm not.

I'm f*cking fuming!

A long long line of inherited wealth plundered from the population over hundreds of years. We're not talking about some self-made millionaire here.

Don't be. It's Friday, you have your health. The Duke of Westminster was already wealthy before today, the family have been well known for the wealth for an age, they don't lie in the shadows unlike 10,000's of tax crook millionaires/billionaires across the Western world. Why let their wedding make you angry?

not really, he probably couldn't pay up without selling up large chunks of the estate. there would be less cash available to invest either way. wealth is held in property, assets, shares, not piled in a vault like Scrooge McDuck. there may be a case for inheritance taxes, but accept that a consequence is less investment.

William was an usher?

He could probably rap a bit, but I'm not sure about him being DJ.
If Rishi had turned up he could have been DJ Shadow (gone at the first sign of a cloud).

You can beat an egg, but you can't beat a whimsical aphorism, especially if it has a whiff of analogy about it  .
