70k a day not to mention a gateway into the lucrative american advertising and showbiz circuit who could blame him! Think his England days are over now which is a shame as even playing in America should not prevent him being considered he still has a few years in him yet!

Just to give you an idea of the impact this signing is having over here, I just got an email from Toronto FC confirming the LA Galaxy will be playing in Toronto this year (although the fixtures aren't officially out yet) and that they sold 200 season tickets within an hour or two of the Beckham announcement. Not bad considering he signed for a team a couple of thousand miles from here.

Just think.... £128,000,001 and he would have been ours !!!!!!!!

a vastly overated player, who only had one good game for England against Greece.

The rest of it was pure publicity / advertising income.

His goals to game ratio from free kicks was terrible, along with his 'magical' passing into the box where players were obviously too thick to realise he was putting the ball there.

If he was serious about his football rather that his wallet, at 31 he should be looking for a top class side - clearly he is still not good enough to rely on his footballing ability alone

Your last sentiment is correct. I think it smacks of a joint decision here. (ha ha ) Where would his publicity junky wife get the most attention.

5 year deal, to play til he's 37
wont play til he's finished his contract at real madrid

every team in the MLS has a salary cap of $500,000 dollars a month.
£200k a month, how much will he be on

The MLS introduced the "Designated Player Rule" (probably henceforth know as the David Beckham rule) in November which allows clubs to sign one player at above the salary cap with the MLS paying up to the salary cap (all contracts are actually owned by the league, not the teams) and the club picking up the rest.
This also means that the LA Galaxy will not be paying the full $250m over 5 years. A good chunk of that will come from the league itself.

Prob more about escaping the prospect of a life back living in this rainy grey shit hole once he's finished in Spain as he'll be eligible for US citizenship etc. having played there, although he'd have probably walked a green card MLS or no MLS anyway.

Has been known as that for quite a while. They would have looked silly if he hadn't signed.

And another comment on the value of this signing to the other teams in the league: Toronto FC have announced that you won't be able to buy a ticket just for the game against LA. If you want to see Beckham, you have to buy a season ticket or a multiple game pack. No mention of Millwall stubs.

Well people have posted jocular smilies, so you must be wrong. Personally I can't really see much to disagree with. A player who certainly gave his all and actually cared about playing for England which some don't seem to, but overrated even in his prime.

But Beckham is already wealthy to the point where it doesn't really matter? Both Milan clubs wanted him, he could have gone to them for a couple of years and tried to prove a point, really establish his legacy (and then cash in the MLS or some oil state anyway), instead he has sold out to be a Hollywood celebrity.

Are you going to be a regular a Toronto FC, Juan? I know its a SSS but that new stadium does look a bit pony really?

I follow the Red Bulls from afar (looking forward to the new stadium in Harrison) but we've been gash for too long.

But maybe he wants a lifestyle change, or to preach the gospel of gods game. Plus that is a hellava lot of money.

His wife is a pop singer, and she followed him to Spain. Maybe they decided to do what was right for her this time round. I think that too is fairly commendable.

I've got tickets for the home opener and will take it from there, depending on when they play.

As for the stadium, what do you expect when it involves the Maple Leafs? Actually, I think it will be fine. If the team do okay, I'm not sure 20,000 will be large enough. We'll see. . .

He'd need 5 years on a green card before he'd be eligible for citizenship (of course he's contract is for 5 years). But it would take a while to get a green card in the first place.
Either way, I don't think people with that kind of money really worry too much about such things.
