My personal favourite was Turrican 2.

A simple 2d platform shooter, but in those days, looked amazing, sounded amazing and had a fabulous range of weapons

Also had a phenomenal soundtrack I seem to remember

Wing Commander was a revelation when it first came to the PC - gouraud shading and a reasonable storyline - but not worthy of a film, mind you...
