How is that idiotic? The idiocy here so far has been your simple maths errors, and claiming that extremely high end products are aimed at normal consumers.

Do you even know what "RAID" actually stands for? Or, indeed, why its very, very dangerous to use RAID-0 setups for backup - as all fast external RAID units are preconfigured as RAID-0.

I have a machine with 64GB of Memory and 135 Terrabytes of raid 5 Disk running 12 partitions supporting over 3000 users

When you've washed your hands might I say MYOB is quite correct about RAID. It stands for 'Redundant Array of Independent Drives'. Please note the 'S' on the last word.

I know what it stands for I HAVE ONE at home ..

In a nutshell for a computer thickie like me if I wanted to back up my hard drive you would advise that I should go to Maplins and buy that one for £59

Yes.

Working in DR, the ability to recover a system is paramount to a business surviving. backing up the systems regularily and testing that the backups work ( you would be surprised how many people bring tapes that are blank) is the major part of that strategy

in a personal sphere, most people have photo's and music on their home PC. Wacking an extra HD on it and backing up these is important if you are worried about losing your stuff

I once made the mistake of not backing up my stuff, and lost a load of photos, some which will never be able to be recreated (West Pier especially). Now I do a backup once a month to ensure I don't lose too much data, as well as saving all my files on a seperate drive to my OS and programs.

I've got a very nice detacheable drive - 250gb MyBook. Runs exceedingly swiftly via the firewire port on my Mac and whether or not this is the correct answer, it does exactly what I want it to do.

I've got an old IDE drive and a cheap ass enclosure off ebay, works dandy ;)

You can get a simple bit of software called "filesync" for the mac that just does a blind copy.

these external hard drives, I have been considering one for storing music and photo's, ie removing all that stuff of the pC.

Is that a good idea and is it a case to spend as much cash as you can afford?

You'll be fine up until the point your external hard drive fails. Then you'll have no photos or music to worry about. Oh, yeah, you'll cursing like f**k as well.

If you want to keep your music and photos on a seperate hard drive, it would pay to invest in a third hard drive purely for backing up the main hard drive and music / photo hard drive.

I have a Mac and use a portable hard drive for my music and a 1TB Time Capsule for backing up my laptop drive and music drive. So if one drive fails, I still have a copy of everything to restore from.
