Have no backup facility and considering buying an external hard drive thingy....using windows XP internal hard disk 150Gb? 45% full...what should i be buying?

It comes with back-up software and seems to be fine.

No, fairly good choice actually.

If they don't come with backup software you can just use NTBackup thats built in to (most versions of) Windows.

Of course you could just copy and paste to the USB drive and if you were really keen you could Ghost your hardrive (if you can blag a copy of Ghost of course).

if your computer supports firewire, get a firewire drive, that way it won't take al day to do your backups

Of course you could just copy and paste to the USB drive and if you were really keen you could Ghost your hardrive (if you can blag a copy of Ghost of course).

USB2 is faster than Firewire, Firewire drives do connect up to the PC faster, but theres no boost on the transfer speed.

My Macs firewire operates at 800mbs, thats TWICE as fast as USB 2 ..

Yes, but its also faster than the maximum throughput of a consumer grade hard drive, meaning its completely irrelevant. Theres no Firewire 800 hard drives. The maximum throughput of an external hard drive is about 60Mbytes a second, which is... 480Mbits a second, which is oddly enough the speed USB2 operates at, for a good reason.

Twice as fast as USB2 is 960Mbits, by the way, which isn't the 800Mbits of Firewire 800.

Faster hard drives exist, but consume too much power to be used in an external unit, at least not one powered by Firewire - and they all use eSATA connectors anyway.

RAID = not one hard disk. A RAID is an array, as the "A" stands for, and are not considered consumer products.

How is that idiotic? The idiocy here so far has been your simple maths errors, and claiming that extremely high end products are aimed at normal consumers.

Do you even know what "RAID" actually stands for? Or, indeed, why its very, very dangerous to use RAID-0 setups for backup - as all fast external RAID units are preconfigured as RAID-0.

When you've washed your hands might I say MYOB is quite correct about RAID. It stands for 'Redundant Array of Independent Drives'. Please note the 'S' on the last word.
