Ah, down the old toasted sandwich route then.

In which case, you can't really beat ham, mature cheddar and lashings of English mustard.

You can, if:

a) You're a vegetarian.
b) You have a pot of impulse purchase coleslaw to use up.

Two points have not been covered here yet.

1. Grate the onion. The resultant slush provides a fair amount of binding goop and the astringent edge required.
2. A tiny scattering of lightly toasted Caraway seed.
