We think we've lost a key for our work van so i contacted Renault today about a replacement. It's a 2005 Renault Traffic and although the key is the remote central locking as well, I was more than shocked when he wanted £160!:ohmy::ohmy::ohmy:

Question to anyone who's in the car or key cutting trade, is there an alternate place to get such things if I still have one working key?

Thanks in advance NSC!

Mate who's a Renault service mechanic says, via MSN "not unles ur a thief", not sure how much veracity to give that mind.

to replace the integral stereo and control panel of mi misses 6 year old seat Ibiza would have cost £560. I managed to find somebody up north who reconditioned it for about £200 but still...

I used to work with some locksmiths. As far as I can remember, they can do this kind of re-coding. But it will cost you. Probably a little cheaper than the Renault people, but still expensive. If you have no keys at all, then they have to re-code the whole thing and it's very pricey. I think they can sort of clone existing keys if you have a spare.

Definitely worth asking a locksmith to quote before going with Renault.

They are expensive aren't they - our subaru needed one and it was £120...

I just googled and found a company called www.autokeys.biz - might be worth checking them out or any of the others that come up on a google search?

I brought one on eBay in the end for £50, works a treat :)

Not much use to you now, but if you have 2 working keys you can generally re-code any spares yourself and get the physical key cut by a locksmith.

They keys themselves are typically about £50 a piece though.

We lost key to our Renault Espace. I had to get the AA to take me to Renault along with passport and ownership documents so they could sell me a key. As I remember that was about £80.

They then arranged for a specialist locksmith to come to my home to cut a new key and reprogram new key and car. Another £150.

Plus a day off work.

Found the key in the garden about two months later.
