Right, I'm more stuck than sticky the stick insect on a particularly sticky stick.

After it was mentioned on another thread that you could upload a current set of data for this old (and rather excellent) version of Championship Manager, I've been trying to get it to work, but no joy.

It all appears to run and load up, but I cannot start a New Game. It does the first part of "initialising game data", then does all the "player histories" but when it then returns to the next part of "initialising game data" it freezes, at the exact same point EVERY single time.

Is it;

My disk? I've cleaned the disk thoroughly and even removed a suspicion looking little scratch. It now looks spotless, but still the same freezing problem.

The updates? I've even tried completely uninstalling and loading it all back up again, with the patch and the September update, but the exact same problem exists.

Vista? I'm always very happy to blame Vista whenever something that used to work no longer does. If this could be the case here, is there something else I could do?

Help. I've been put off the CM games a bit by it all getting a bit overly complex, but while the names on the older versions are all a bit too far out of date these days, so this seemed to be the perfect solution, I got all excited and now I've spent 2 days getting thoroughly frustrated by this. I could trawl through eBay and get myself a new disk, but is that the problem here?

What do my esteemed colleagues think?

sounds like a problem with the update, something is corrupting it and forcing the game to crash. Do you select the database file size before starting a new game? if so try changing that to a lower one or highre to see if that works

Have you got the most recent VERSION of cm0102? the most recent download on the Sigames site?

I think I've got the database size that it defaults to in settings, but I will try changing it to see if that helps.

Also, all the fan made updates are made solely for use with the latest OFFICIAL patch, so you need to make sure you're using the latest version of CM 01/02 before changing the database files.

Tried all 3 database sizes, and the same problem exists.

try it without the database update, if that fails then somethings majorly wrong, have a search of the CM/FM forums as others may of had the same issue and fixed it

Having extracted the new database into the data folder, replacing the old files, how could I go back to check? Would I need to uninstall, reinstall afresh and run the patch again?

Additional problem now ... despite the disk being in the drive it says it can't see it. There is a solution in the "read Me" file, but I can't find the option it suggests I should try enabling or disabling.

This is from the readme file in my CM 01\02 directory concerning the cd problems;

"----------------
Copy Protection
----------------

Should you experience a problem when trying to run Championship Manager where the game asks for the CD
even though it's already in your drive please try the following :

* Under 'My Computer' right click and select properties
* Click on the Device manager tab
* Right click and select the properties of the CD Rom drive in question
* Search for the option 'DMA'

If this is enabled, disable it, if its disabled enable it. This has been known to solve the issue on drives where it hasn't recognised the CD

Customer services have been aware of this problem which affects a small minority of users"

Hope this helps.

That's the solution I referred to, but unfortunately that was written pre-Vista, and in Vista I can't find the "option DMA"

Completely confused now. I'm back to the stage where having unistalled and re-installed, and having run the latest patch, I am absle to load a new game, hurrah, but ..... despite the fact that I thought I'd uninstalled and thereforee started all over again, I've still got the adjustments I'd made in the game editor months ago, showing up in the "new game" I've loaded subsequent to re-installing.

How has that happened, and is that anything to do with why it all goes wobbly bob when I load up the updated data, because I'm now thinking I'm missing a step here somewhere.

Help!

Job DONE!

Pissing bloody Vista, I just KNEW that would be the issue. All works fine as long as I've set the .exe file to "Run as Administrator", otherwise it won't access the files it needs to.

Da-dah!
