Just a discussion from the boozer I'll open up on here.

If you stuck say Man Utd, Inter , Barca etc into the world cup.

Would they win it ?

exactly. most teams in the top flight would be playing their reserves and kids.

though my Barca workmate said the way round that would be to enter as Catalonia as half the Barca teams local and it would pull in some usfull Spanish players too.

Since France won in '98 , cashed up european club sides have had it all over
national teams . These clubs are teams of international all-stars playing together on a regular basis .
Which IMHO has diminished the spectacle of the World Cup somewhat .

Club football will *never* diminish the spectacle of the World Cup IMO. Never. Granted, the top 3 or 4 clubs sides might beat the best national team, but it really is besides the point. Afterall, it's arguably true to say that winning the European Championship is harder than winning the WC, but that doesn't stop the WC being the one everyone wants to win.

The World Cup is just an awesome celebration of the game, and these days it treads that fine line between showcasing the game to developing nations and providing a global competition worthy of the name, and it does it almost to perfection in a 32 team competition.

The World Cup has the power to start wars and end them, to unite the people in a nation, and to give small nations the chance to punch above their weight on a world stage. How many people do you think even knew whereabouts in Africa the Ivory Coast was before they qualified for a World Cup?

Club competitions will never come close to diminishing the impact of the World Cup.
