I am not seeing "football genius"

I am seeing open attacking football which is great if you are a " neutral spectator ".

It really is superb to watch as a fan at times. However there is no plan for recovery if an attack breaks down and you get "counter attacked" Every player in the team should know who the should be marking if a team hits you on the break.

But how can you do that when players are operating all over the place on the pitch.

There is absolutely no structure and no shape to the team defensively. And I said. It is pleasing on the eye. However all those TV Pundits drooling over don't feel any pain when the team concedes on the counter attack like the fans do

Couldn’t agree with you more.

See my post somewhere on NSC tonight, where I quoted Mariappa of Watford, who are on a good run. Pearson has drummed into them about a traditional defensive shape when they haven’t got the ball.

My ideal defence would be:

New RB (in this window) Duffy Dunk Bernardo

That may lose some of the footballing genius of Webster and Burn, but it’s a back to defending basics set up,

Youre not wrong Weststander :) We've seen Liverpool and Man City with the sweeper keeper and ball playing defenders, but ours are just not good enough. It all seems very simple, to win we need to score more than them, and we wont lose if we dont concede, for that we need defenders, whose first priority is to defend our goal.

If Webster is a better passer than Duffy, what good is that if his far inferior defending ability gifts the opposition more goals than the far more solid Duffy would?

Webster is a donkey as noticed since his first game. However the largest weakest are the defensive midfielders in front of them. Considering neither ever make an assist or score a goal, or help defensively, not sure what their purpose is to be honest.

I'd add however that we need someone in the centre of the park to grab the game by the short and curlys and get stuck in, bomb forward to support the striker.
Well yes, obviously. We might have improved under Hughton if we had one of those too.

On that last point, I’ve always said that about fullbacks, their no 1 job is to defend for 90 minutes. I’ve faced criticism from the Montoya fan club, who love the way he ventures forward, creating goal after goal. I’m backed on that by Lee Disin and Gary Neville, whenever they’re asked on TV about the role of the modern FB or WB.

Same principle applies to CB’s, defending strengths come first.

Agreed. The defending for Villa's equaliser would have shamed a Sunday League team. And it was eerily reminiscent of Southampton's first goal at the Amex. Ball lost in front of the dugouts, no pressure to try to win it back, play switched to the other flank where defenders are asleep. It's almost as if we've learned nothing.

And today I'd add individuals letting us down badly. I've been a fan of Bernardo, but the way he turned his back on that shot for their first goal was a disgrace. I'd like to think that Duffy had a word after that.

We're in need of someone who's a specialist at breaking up the oppositions play, Someone who's a bit of a nutter, grabs the bull by the horns, riles up the opposition and gets the the team into the fighting gear. Stephens doesn't do this. He's a neat player but just hasn't got that nastiness we need n the middle.

It’s quite frightening when we can all see this as laymen in the stands, before it happens, often with warning salvo’s of the same opposition moves almost leading to goals, before the killer blow that does .... but the manager and players do nowt to adjust.

I saw this from the NS in the final 4 months of CH. Opposition LW’ers destroying Montoya, but not one thing was done to adjust for that.

Similarly this season Jota tearing us apart for Wolves. A quality player, but we changed nothing to mitigate that.

You going for the world record of 'how many clichés can I fit in one post'? Because I think you may have nailed it.

Club seems to me to be ludicrously top-heavy in the recruitment department. Ashworth, Winstanley mob, Potter bloke. Doubtless all manner of political in-fighting we never get to hear about. If ever there was an Albion department that needed a leaner meaner management structure, this is the one shirley

The problem is - the way we are set up we need an 'Ashworth' - otherwise we're run by Barber and the fact we have an Ashworth tells me that Barber doesn't want to / can't effectively run the footballing side too. Similar to Ed Woodward at Man Utd and look at how well that is working.

Personally I'd be looking at Winstanley, despite some short term success the recruitment has been pretty shit since we got promoted. And from what I hear he is fairly lucky to still be around.

That's a pretty strange post. Can't recall anyone ever previously suggesting on here that Barber had any kind of input whatsoever into the playing side of things.

It is in response to what does Ashworth do / do we need him. If we did not have an 'Ashworth' then you would have a 'Barber'

I agree fully. We have bought no players in our pl era who have been value for money. (Except maybe Pröpper, Gross and Bernardo). Squad needs a revamp

Ryan?
Alzate?
Montoya cost £6m...

I disagree with the 'value for money bit' to be honest - if we were talking about £30m players who have turned out to be ordinary, then fair enough. But how much 'better-than-average' can we expect a £6m right back to be in the Premier League? It's pretty much peanuts these days.

Agreed. Tony Bloom wants us to be smart with recruitment and seek value for money, rather than pay big transfer fees and wages and to be fair that’s his prerogative.

But that is, and always has been, at odds with the recruitment of strikers.

Which in turn appears to be the aspect of the game Mr Barber has never ever come to terms with.

Well we will have medium or long term value for money with Big Viktor. But he isn't keeping us in the PL this season.
