Goodfellas has to get a mention.

Also Touch Of Evil....great camera work...pans back and up from car with bomb.

Surprised no-one's mention S**r W**s....pretty good opening shot of spaceship filling whole screen.

How about the opening to Once Upon A Time In The West.

Three grimy characters wait for a train in the heat, complete with chance appearance of fly buzzing about on the face of one of the men. Superbly tense, curious and atmospheric start to one of the greatest Spaghetti Westerns of them all.

(Did you know: Spag' Westerns are called Macaroni Westerns in Japan!)

Good call. The whole idea of Bronson blowing his mouth organ, mimicking the execution..pure f***ing quality..."I've got to know, Ise just got to know..."

Sounds just like the stewards at H Block

Only spoken by a guy who is probably about 19 years old and should really get a new Barber.

Bless him.

The more portly one (brunette) has dipped out after being insulted by some bloke with stupid specs, she now stands on the edge of the pitch looking severe.
DTG's bird...built for comfort, is a good laugh, but lacks the common touch...Dave, just tell her you don't love her..or maybe you do!

Alien doesn't open with the creature bursting from his chest though. Thats about 45 minutes in.

I know that, the opening to Alien is classic imo, really sets the film up and has you on edge from the word go even though nothing happens.. genius.

Always thought Mr Madonna did good beginnings to movies... Lock Stock adn Snatch. Pity about the rest of the films though.....

Best one for me: a 90-second continuous take that sets the scene for the whole film - great ending too. Notable for being the only good film that Charlton Heston starred in and for being discussed at length in The Player.

Love the beginning of Apocalypse Now too ("Saigon, shit, I'm still in Saigon")

Yes, I see what you mean now. The slow-pan throught the empty control room of the Nostromo is a masterful, ominous opening to the film. The subtle, soft score in the background is just perfect as well.

I still think the sets they built for the ships interior in that film look amazing, nearly 30 years on. Alien is a movie that just doesn't seem to age. Ridley Scott is an absolute genius, probably my favourite director.
