Thank you everyone. This thread has given me exactly what I wanted. Its also reminded me about numerous other albums I love but had forgotten about. I’ll report back on my listening experiences.

Gong Live - if only because it is a Double Album and it covers all their stuff from the best years 1971-75

and talking of Daevid Allen's previous band:

Triple Echo - the Soft Machine History from 1967 to 1976. Marvellous Scenes as they evolved from Hippie Pop into Jazz Rock sans vocals.

The Moon in June from their 1971 John Peel session is probably my favourite piece of Music ever...

The album that got me into music….T.Rex , Electric warrior ( my older sister played this to death in the early 70S)

The first album I bought….Never mind the bollocks….Sex pistols

The album that completely changed the way I think….feeding of the 5000….Crass.

Special mention to a Brighton band called POG whose LP Between the station and the see is an absolute joy.

Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy - The Who (technically an early greatest hits)
Specials - The Specials
Parallel Lines - Blondie
Tapestry - Carol King
New Boots and Panties - Ian Dury
One Step Beyond - Madness
London Calling - The Clash

I bought all of these, even Meaty, beaty, big and bouncy. My son has them all now and plays some of them on his fairly new record deck.

You beat me to In the Court of the Crimson King. I was waiting till I got to the end of the thread before posting. Probably the first ever prog Rock album. 21st Century Schizoid Man is mindblowing (to me).

Could well be, obviously none of the original lineup are still members and doubt if they play any of the stuff I like (1969 to 1975).
