Following on from the thread of classy defenders who do we think was a classy midfielder for the club in his day ..The likes of Sully or Grealish etc. For me it would be Dennis Mortimer , only here a season and didnt play too many games but class !!

Danny Wilson is my favourite Albion player of all time, not necessary classy as in a flair World beater, but a damn fine player all the same.

John Gregory. Could play in any position at the back or midfield, scored goals too.

The 'wisdom' of the Goldstone was that he was shit, and they gave him loads of grief, so we sold him to QPR, where he did nothing...........apart from then get into the England team.

Similarly Neil McNab, quality player with the ball at his feet, superb distribution, hated by the West Stand. Sold for £30,000 to Man City and became a regular for them and player of the season.

Steve Penney was the most skilful player i have seen. Mark Lawrenson was the best midfielder in the best midfield we have ever had (in my opinion).

Penney was brilliant.

Lawro was a defender.

Midfielders with real "flair" isnt an area that we were ever over-blessed in from memory. Our best midfileders always seem to be people like Case, Mortimer, Grealish, Wilson - grafters rather than flair.
McNab yes, Steve Penney definitely. Could make a case for Wally Gould, Peter Sullivan and Howard Wilkinson (admittedly from the days when wingers were forwards rather than midfielders). Could we stretch a point and promote Gary Stevens from defence to midfied? And how about the much maligned Robert Codner?

IMHO the best by far was Dennis Mortimer and followed by Robert Codner, who virtually beat Millwall on his own to get us to the playoffs at Wembley under Barry Lloyd.

Another classy one, and his name alludes me at this moment is the lad who was killed in a car crash, just remembered could be Barry Rees?

Met Sully a couple of weeks ago, he lives locally, but never been to the Withdean Stadium, no interest in doing so. Seems a bit fed up with football in general, working for a plant hire company I think he said. Spent most of the time talking about how much beer he had drunk the night before, and the state of his hangover, and how it compared to other hangovers.

I may have only seen him play a few times and can't really remember, so can't comment on his class, seems a shame he has nothing to do with the club now, after such a long career with us back in the day.

Not suggesting he was particularly good or anything, but I always liked the Aussie fella Dave Clarkson.

He had a bit of flair about him. He also had the best looking missus of any Albion player in history, including Hendo's admittedly fantastic effort.

She was your perfect Aussie blonde. Think 'Pepper' off Neighbours, with the added bonus that she was an international gymnast!

Forgot about Rees. A really promising player in the Archie McAuley era. Welsh U-23
Not surprised about Sully. Seem to remember he and Kit Napier competing for the most tobacco stained fingers and the booziest breath after a match.
Anyone remember Brian Deer (signed from West Ham) or did the little fat maestro count as an out & out forward? Could play though

Dennis Mortimor was IMHO the classiest midfielder we ever had, although in his later days, the great Frank Worthington did play for us( seemed to spend most of his time being a genius in midfield)

BTW I was one of the McNab haters I am afraid to say- I cannot remember him ever putting in a forward pass and we used to call him "the crab". having said that, turning the clock back, looking at some of the so called midfielders we have had recently, he would have walked into our side.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Frank Worthington - all skill and class but no pace whatsoever when we had him. He know exactly what he wanted to do and put the ball in exactly where he wanted it - just a shame his legs couldn't get him there, but he was streets ahead of all the rest of team. They couldn't anticipate what he was going to do and so couldn't get there either. He kept laying off passes to where somebody should have been but nobody could keep up.
Also possibly the worst baldy ponytail haircut I have seen on a football pitch.
