I’d sooner clap for supermarket workers. They kept the shops open and the shelves filled while my local GP surgery and dentist shut down for most of the year.

I won’t though. But if any supermarket worker reads this then, thanks.

Same goes for all those courier drivers. People can still eat good food, plus get their supermarket shopping brought to their door without risking getting the virus. :clap2:

I think you’re letting Boris (and the rest of the cabinet) off rather lightly there.

No I'm not. I've been critical of some of the decisions that have been made - and particularly those that have been bottled because Boris is such a fanatical libertarian that he has to avoid using the word 'must' (i.e, please wear a face mask - if you want to - but errmm, if it upsets you ...................).

I'm no great fan of Boris myself, but I can recognise when some people are so upset that a). we've left the EU and b). that they don't like Boris, that they'll blame him for anything bad that happens, anywhere, any time. Just get a grip, eh? He's not a great man, he's not a great Prime Minister, but he isn't the devil incarnate either. Hey, did you know there are some people who believe the US election was rigged by people who are part of a paedophile ring (and are also probably lizards)? ...... yep, there are some basket cases that actually do. Think on it ...........................

But you said that anybody would have messed it up as much as Johnson. And they haven't. As I pointed out in the post you have ignored. How do you justify your statement when evidence has been produced to the contrary?

Well, I didn't write that, did I. Stick to facts please.

You have highlighted variables, rightly so.
Let’s look at the things that anyone could have done to make matters worse but didn’t, that don’t rely on country specific factors;

Boris released old people back into care homes, causing countless unnecessary deaths. Morrison didn’t.

Boris ignored scientific advice and delayed circuit breakers and lockdowns. Causing unnecessary deaths. Morrison didn’t.

Boris handed out contracts that proved useless and expensive, to his pals with no experience. Causing unnecessary deaths. Morrison didn’t.

Boris allowed his advisor to lie to the public, let his rule breaking go unpunished and supported that lie. Morrison didn't.

Boris ****ed up track and trace. Morrison didn't.

Boris has never particularly enforced the law and the rules. Morrison did, vehemently.

While the world was Lockdown Boris was encouraging people to shake hands and hug loved ones. Causing Unnecessary deaths. Morrison didn’t.

Boris said it was fine to keep schools open despite all the scientific advice. Causing unnecessary deaths. Morrison didn’t.

I could go on. And on.

Everybody else would have made a mess of it? Well they wouldn’t and they didn’t. Boris is a moron who has cause countless unnecessary deaths and nearly every other nation’s leaders haven’t. It’s as simple as that.

Fortunately, we don't need to go Aus to get an alternative scenario because we can see within the UK how things have panned out under different political leadership.

England - Tory, not great (eg deaths, infection rates, care homes)

Wales - Labour, not great (eg deaths, infection rates, care homes)

Scotland- SNP not great (eg deaths, infection rates, care homes)

It's also the case nearly every other nation have made serious mistakes (see the current vaccine rollout debacle across Europe).

Yeah, I didn't expect you to concede anything there. Johnson delivered your Brexit, you won't hear a word against him. It's blinding your judgment.

You missed the, England - Tory not great bit then. That's not defending him it's just challenging your view he's uniquely bad.

I get it Clampy, he's a Tory, he delivered Brexit therefore he will always be the antichrist in your eyes.

A friend of mine who is a midwife just posted this on FB (I have asked permission to share).

Don’t clap for me, just stay at home.
I’m not looking for a pay-rise in the middle of a global recession when so many of you have lost your livelihood.
I just want everyone to take this seriously and do their bit. Stick to the rules, don’t have people round, don’t meet in groups.
Think of us going to work, not knowing what each shift entails. Wearing masks and gowns and goggles and gloves all day, everyday. Cleaning and preparing spaces tirelessly to reduce transmission. Adapting to constant changes to services and communicating this to those in our care. Making contingency plans for worse case scenario and seeing those start to play out for real. Apologising and holding space for so many. Worried about the spread of the virus in the community, catching the virus and bringing it home
Think of all those people waiting for treatments and operations, postponed as we firefight Covid and care for critically ill.
Think of those who’s birth wishes are stolen and are feeling scared to welcome new life in the world.
Don’t clap for me, just stay at home.

Good post

Like Scotland and Wales did and there NHS is in a far worse state than ours.

The English Government sets the overall budget for Scotland and Wales as no matter how ministers representing Scotland or Wales feel it's England that has the numbers.

Once this budget is set and in the control of the devolved Governments only they can chose how to prioritise and spend that budget.

Healthcare spending in 2017/18 in Scotland was £2,368 per person, while in England it was £2,182, Wales £2,324, and in Northern Ireland £2,320.

Looking at Scotland as a result of this additional spending per head Scotland has 76 GPs per 100,000 people, compared to a national UK average of 60.

Scotland also has more qualified nurses and midwives per 1,000 population than the UK, with 8.1 per 1,000 recorded in Scotland compared to 7.9 in the UK as a whole.

Scotland’s NHS also provides 4.2 hospital beds per 1,000 of the population, while the UK as a whole only has 2.6 beds per 1,000. This is one of the worst bed-to-population rates in the OECD, placing the UK 30th place out of 35. Were Scotland an independent OECD country in 2015, it would have taken 19th place out of 36 in terms of beds-to-population.

Scotland is the only one out of the four countries to offer domestic personal care and nursing services for over 65s. The NHS in Scotland has the reputation of being the most efficient compared to its neighbours, and Scotland has been used as an example to be followed by other NHS organisations.

Scotland also provide free prescriptions and free eye tests to all

Tbf this latest initiative is called “Clap For Hero’s”

It’s just a few posters on here have used this thread as a vehicle to discuss the pay of the NHS staff.

I like Scott Morrison, but to give him all the credit for the way Australia has handled this pandemic would be mistaken.

Each state sets its own health policy, and also its own border control policy. Two states in particular have pretty much isolated themselves through the last few months, WA and QLD. Australia is in a strong position compared to many, mainly due to geography and population density, but also the one decision that Scott Morrison had a big say in. The international border was pretty much slammed shut from day one. We are pretty much unable to leave and there is still a queue of 30,000 Aussies waiting to get back.

One state in particular has done the hard grind. Victoria was on the verge of being overrun by COVID, but acted and acted tough. It is a Labour governed state, and as much as I do not like the Premier, Dan Andrews achievement of eliminating Covid is impossible to ignore. We seem to be winning the latest battle too, so far.

The lack of PPE had a lot to do with that. Dentists opened again once they could work safely. As they have people breathing directly in their faces - and vice-versa - they’re a high risk for transmission.

GPs ... shut down or operated in a different way? It doesn’t make much sense for doctors to see a stream of different sick people who could be COVID+ face to face unless they absolutely have to. If all the doctors and nurses are incapacitated, then where will we be?

Kudos to supermarket workers for continuing throughout. I wouldn’t want to do it. But it’s a different scenario to one that involves close and/or prolonged contact which is inherently high risk.

Excellent
Yeah, from family over there I have heard it’s been tough but pretty effective.
It seems they’ve all done better than Johnson.
