10% sounds a lot, but it only equates to 1.5p a pint.

Duty on beer, wine and spirits will increase as planned from midnight on Sunday, including 10% on cider, with further increases to come on high strength cider.

I think the rationale is the people with serious alcohol problems and young people wanting to get shit faced quickly and cheaper opt for the £ 50p a can white lightning at 9% to do so.

but people drink real cider too.. why not a tax on real ale drinkers instead of ones who drink cheap lagers.

Didnt it say 10% above inflation which if as suggested will be 2% next year that then means that cider tax will go up 12% + Vat and the landlord needing to maintain his GP means it will go up at least 5p pint in pubs. Will probably be 6p or even 8p a pint.

I think the problem with cider was, as I understand it, that there was no real weighting for strength.

Real ale/lager on the other has duty charged based on the ABV. Duty on a pint of beer is roughly 10p (just under) per 1% ABV, rounded to the nearest 0.1%. So a pint of strong ale, say Robinson's Old Tom (8.5%) will have a whopping 85p duty on a pint, whereas a pint of 8.5% cider will have much, much less.

This is just bringing cider more into line with real ale and lager. But, of course, as most cider drinkers are straw-chewing countryside inbreds there's going to be loads of boohooing about it.

presumably it's to pay for the extra university places? More students = more cider drunk = more cider tax income = pay for more student places. It's a virtuous circle.

Good shout on 5Live:

"I'm gutted about the rise in cider duty. You try and do you bit for global warming, convert your car to run on the stuff and then look what happens!"
