You mention the rich list..then you don`t give it a tinkers cuss.................Surely if we climbed higher in the rich country list we could afford to pay more benefits to these children in poverty.......Or would you prefer we go down the Greek route and spend ,spend, spend enjoy it while we can and bollocks to ten years down the line..

the poor still have less and the rich still have more
pay more benefits? george has just taken some more away.
and who does being the 4th richest in the world benefit, you, me, or those who already have plenty

two thirds of the children in poverty in this country are from working familes
and this is the 4th richest country in the world
and its all about to get worse
can anyone who voted tory explain this to me
SENSIBLY ..................................with out the binfest please

the sensible answer is that poverty is a relative definition. iirc its 60% of median earnings, so currently about 15k a year. so unless every family household income of over 15k, there will be poverty. and of course if every house hold did earn 15k, the median would rise, so the poverty threshold would rise...etc. so essentially the "two thirds in poverty are from working families" is a product of statistical manipulation, not a measure of actual poverty, which doesn't have any real definition. they may change definition this to alter the statistical outcome, it would not change real poverty unfortunately, while most will focus on the headline numbers.

Its amazing we live in a country that treats the poor in this disgusting manner and yet half the displaced world seemed to risk life and limb to join the down trodden masses of the uk:whistle:

thats probably because they are lied to by the trafficers

yes , because traffickers prefer to have the extra difficulty of trying to get them into the uk rather than the ease of leaving them in mainland europe dont they ?

My suggestion with my pretty graph was that wages are not keeping up with the continuing increase in living costs, particularly housing costs, and there is not enough government support to help people affected by it, or policies to prevent it from happening.

your pretty graphs tells us nothing about the cost of living, only the cost of rent. in the same period many other costs have gone down (mortgages for one), some have gone up. dont cherry pick data..

They really don't, they try and escape the shit they are in and some try to get to the UK. Far less than half. I would be interested in any credible evidence you have that shows the comparison between people trying to the UK over other countries. Funnily enough if you listen to the unfounded rhetoric over here then most of them are trying to invade Australia and introduce sharia law.

But then Murdoch owns a lot of the media here too.

They would hardly likely to pay thousands to traffickers if they knew the reality of living 20 to a room controlled by a gangmaster and earning 20p an hour picking fruit or such

precisely this

I don't give a tinkers cuss about the rich list
this goverment is going to make the poor even poorer
can you explain why children from working families are in poverty?.....or is that to difficult for you to understand?

It is no good getting shirty with folk who respond to your vague and sweeping initial statement. What is poverty, and what definition are you using? What is about to get worse, and what evidence do you have to support that wild statement? This government is trying to encourage reluctant families into work - surely that would make them less poor? Why should Tory voters have to defend themselves necessarily - has poverty just been invented? If you introduce a thread, and one as worthwhile as this, then you have to bring in a far greater degree of specificity.

have you ever tried to get a mortgage while in a low paid job and rented property, or tried to get any sort of credit
Presumably everyone...Just think if we were near the bottom of the country rich list how many would be in real poverty..

with the money in this country we should not have anyone living in poverty

The Tories are solving problems by redefining them. Works a treat, what a wonderful government.

Sounds like an episode of Yes Minister to me.

1 in 4 births are to immigrants parents:moo: A few more mouths to feed and house:eek:

Interested to know where you got that figure Rev. If it's correct, and I'm not suggesting for one minute it isn't, then I wonder what percentage of the UK population is made up of immigrants - that would put the 25% of births into real perspective.

I have just given you a thumbs-up to bring you back to zero.

Having read through the thread to date, I doubt whether you are ever going to get a sensible answer out of any right leaning person on here through their prejudice and ignorance.

If it is any consolation, I was involved in a sensible conversation the other day with a Conservative, whose husband has actually stood as a parliamentary candidate in the past, and who was doing all she could to support the local food bank. I had a conversation with her husband shortly after the election who said he had vowed to get back involved in politics to counter the UKIP thing.

That is not about child poverty, but I just hope it comes back to bite the Chancellor at the next election when so many people who voted for them turn out to be worse off.

and there is nothing wrong with that, but two thirds of their children are still in poverty this even when they do work, do you think this is OK ?

I accept that being in poverty in Britain is probably less awful than being in poverty in, say, South Sudan. But is "a slightly less shitty life than you'd have in South Sudan" really the extent of right-wing ambition for Britain's poor children? I guess from your comment that, yes, it is.

but with a relative measure it is inevitable some will be statistically considered in poverty. make a objective, absolute measure then you can go about eradicating it.

For all the pomp and ceremony we put on today this country has gone I'm afraid. The things that used to hold this country together, the way people integrated, the way everyone could work afford their own home build for their future it's all gone down then toilet, I don't think it will ever come back.
