It will be pretty much that price if it gets there, and the chances are that it won't. Trainer and jockey both suggested after Leopardstown that it's more likely to go for the Ryanair. Also needs its very soft, and since they felt the need to water at Ascot in mid-February, it's hard to see it being anything but good, fast ground at Cheltenham.

Not a hope. Doesn't stay, going wont be soft and will probably go for the Ryanair...apart from that he has a good chance !!!

The winner is running Tomorrow. Kauto Star.

120 on betfair and 17.5 for a place if you must back it.

50 per cent good common sense there Billy, 50 per cent nonsense.

Think you'll find the winner ran at Newbury last weekend.

A good performance from Kauto Star Today. Can't wait for the Gold Cup now, which promises to be a brilliant race although Kauto may just demolish the rest.

From sporting life

A number of bookmakers have suspended betting on the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup amid rumours about the wellbeing of favourite Kauto Star.

Paul Nicholls' reigning champion was an impressive winner of the Commercial First Ascot Chase on Saturday afternoon, seeing off Monet's Garden by eight lengths.

However, the Racing Post later reported that Nicholls' stable star has sprained a fetlock and that the trainer will issue an update on his wellbeing on Sunday.

Stan James, totesport and Paddy Power were among the bookmakers to stop taking bets on the March 14 feature.

Vet Buffy Shirley-Bevan is due to examine Kauto Star on Sunday morning, with Nicholls hoping his initial fears will not be realised.

The champion trainer later told the Racing Post that Ascot's senior vet Sven Kold had informed him it was possible an infection was developing in one of Kauto Star's feet.

Although Nicholls reports the horse to be lame behind, he has not ruled out a crack at next month's Gold Cup.

There's a suggestion now that it's an infection, though it's an odd co-incidence that it suddenly appeared a couple of hours after the race. If it is a fetlock, the chances of him even getting there are about 4-1 against, and he'll have done little or no serious work in the run-up.

Betfair have said that they are going to suspend their market at midnight. Was looking forward to seeing Kauto versus Denman more than any race I can remember since Mtoto was in his pomp, but being realistic the 2.3 to 2.4 currently available on there about Denman looks huge. Even if Kauto Star turns up, it's hard to see him being much bigger.

It's back on!

A HUGELY relieved Paul Nicholls this morning said that the scare over Kauto Star's fitness was all but over.

After impressively winning the Grade 1 Ascot Chase on Saturday the Gold Cup winner was found to be lame behind.

On returning home Nicholls and head lad Clifford Baker took the shoe off the hind leg to relieve any pressure and poulticed the foot over night. It was at this point they were confident the problem was not serious.

Nicholls said this morning: "I've had a very sleepless night but fortunately this morning puss came out of the foot and when we trotted him up he was virtually sound.

"There will be no setback with his training for the Gold Cup."

"He would have had a couple of days off after running anyway and this should clear up within 48 hours, so it shouldn't make too much difference.

A number of bookmakers suspended their markets on the Gold Cup after rumours about the wellbeing of Kauto Star began to surface.

"We were fairly confident it was something simple like that but it's a huge relief," Nicholls added.

"I was almost afraid to go in this morning to find out what was wrong!

"I'm absolutely chuffed though, and it's all systems go for the Gold Cup now."

Kauto Star and stablemate Denman have long dominated the Gold Cup market and the pair are set to clash for the first time in the March 14 event.
