promising to give away billions and still vilified simple because he's well known figure and bought a football club as his hobby. tough crowd.
Why is he a well-known figure ?

If you think that's simply because of his ownership of Chelsea you are very very wrong.

you might keep more ear to the ground, vast majority of people couldnt name another Russian oligarch until last week. or probably any Russian other than a few past leaders, Kasperov and a selection of favourite sports persons. he's not well known for owning an aluminium business or being governor of some Siberian hinterland. he's famous because he brought Chelsea.

Leading the peace talks in Belarus. Selling his football club in order to donate billions to aid the war victims of Ukraine. I think we already have our next Nobel Peace Prize winner in waiting.

In the meantime, I will be riding a pink unicorn with a flowing rainbow mane along the seafront, and up Lewes Road to the next home game.

ignorance is a sound reason for not knowing someone. not what you mean of course. im curious if he's well known for other reasons, what in particular? and why are a dozen others not just as well known.

Amazing gesture to give the net proceeds to the Ukraine appeal . No other individual donation will match this anywhere in the world .

He obviously can’t criticise Putin because most of his business is in Russia but it’s obvious by his immense kind gesture what he thinks about the invasion.

Amazing man .

blimey, that's naive.

he's got £20B left, so he won't notice it's gone, and he only got the money cos he knows where the bodies are buried

Roman Abramovich is writing off the 1.5 billion pounds he’s put into Chelsea football club. To put that into perspective he could have instead spent the Easter school holidays at Center Parcs. #Football #holidays #money

Nicked off Twitter….:D

Yup. They just said on Newsnight that if we assume Chelsea represents 5% of his net worth, he’s gambling that if he gives it up he’ll be left in peace with the remaining 95%, rather than risk losing everything.

And so endeth the biggest and grossest act of sportswashing dirty money ever.

19 years in which his dodgy money has bought him a treasure trove of cups, and in which time proud clubs like Everton, Leeds, Newcastle, West Ham have won nothing, and even Spurs have won just one League Cup.

In his first season - so almost 20 years ago - he still managed to spend £120 million on players, and this is on a squad that finished 4th the season before. F*ck off Roman and f*ck off Chelsea.

Not sure Everton (Dodgy Russian owner) West Ham (Porn proceeds) and Newcastle are very good examples.

He’s a very high-level gangster who achieved his huge wealth through corruption. Sport washing has worked well for him. This is just a stunt to cut his losses and buy good PR to avoid having all his assets frozen.

I think it is profits isn't it?

Even so.....quite.

Given that he has spent 1.5 billion odd on the club (is that figure correct?) I can't help but wonder how much profit there actually will be?

Has ANY Russian Oligarch achieved their commercial success without having been given a leg up by the ‘party’? Hiding in plain sight is also an excellent way to avoid unwanted attentions, until the veneer is blown off by events so damaging that the only recourse is to really hide.

Posts like this are clear evidence sportswashing works. You don't just buy yourself a fanbase of thousands of whichever club you decide to buy, a good number of whom will defend you whatever, you also buy yourself fans of other clubs who will ignore everything else and fawn over the dough that you plough in.

I’ll look after it for them. So long as a new crew and all expenses are paid for.

Would you though?

It only has 2 helipads.

Oh the humanity.
