They could release players or not pay them in order to keep the club afloat. They could play youngsters to fulfil fixtures.

Players would have to want to leave, it’s not as simple as that.

If they have 16 million in the bank as reported, they will have to play people with no wages

Delaying the sanction was a very high risk strategy that luckily appears to have paid off. Had Putin's pal been able to offload the club last week he could have just buggered off with his £3bn and nothing could have been done. But all's well that ends well.

under sanctions, the cash assets from the sale would be frozen. unless he moved them to a Russian bank, which are a) embargoed and b) ruble is toast. really this is just more theater for public consumption.
it does highlight that similar complex rules must be applying to many other business those sanctioned own. which of course is the point, and some will close and consequences from that. if Chelsea go into admin and get a points deduction, no one can complain. a lot seem to relish the prospect.

Gurjit's not a happy bunny at all, expect there to be some anti-government demo's at Stamford Bridge at the next home game.

Bet the Chelsea fans who sung Roman's name during the Ukraine tribute at Burnley at the weekend are feeling pleased with themselves.

The most curious thing..
Chelsea FC cannot sell any more tickets for games, its merchandise shop will be closed, and it will be unable to buy or sell players on the transfer market.

The government said it would issue a special licence that allows fixtures to be fulfilled, staff to be paid and existing ticket holders to attend matches.

I agree, It does put the PL in an interesting situation - will they want Chelsea (or Everton) stinking up the league and potentially losing sponsors?

Empty grounds doesn’t look good either

If the PL had any sort of moral compunction they would see this as a watershed moment and ensure that all owners, foreign or uk based were genuinely fit, proper and could demonstrate that their funding was generated by lawful means. It should mean an end to the likes of Man City, Chelsea, Everton and most recently Newcastle being funded by nations and individuals who don’t share the values of the communities they inject themselves into - free speech, free press, inclusivity etc etc. I know there are legal issues, I know there are grey areas but we all knew Chelsea’s money stank and we all know that is true of others. I am not holding my breath though…..

Let’s hope that the vast majority weren’t season tickets holders either! Getting a home ticket will prove a big challenge.

Genuine question, are financial institutions allowed to give them credit facility under the terms of the license?

Depends……once sanctions are in place basically OFSI have to supervise/approve anything so would need to fully assess reasons, source and application of funds, repayment arrangements etc etc. Impossible for any of us to be certain what can and can’t be done

they do. what you're asking for is an arbitary "moral" check, which will include or exclude some peoples money depending on the source.
