He came back to training a week early.

Obviously really wanted to get back into the side this year. I suppose if he didn't he might have to look elsewhere. Had a good pre-season and a cracking game at Oldham. I thought he was back to his best. He looked really good in the middle of the park.

Well done Charlie. Keep it up.

I wasn't able to get to the game yesterday so can't comment on Charlie's performance but I'm not sure he fits the role of the creative midfielder that we need...good game or not. That said, it makes a change to see him earning a little praise.

Charlie did *alright* yesterday. By that I mean he did pretty much all that was asked of him, nothing more (although that little overhead kick to Knight would have been nice had it come off). But as someone else has already said, he still looked like he was chasing the game at times.

Oldham were nothing special. A better team would have exploited the space we left in the centre at times yesterday.

Peter Taylor didn't think Oatway was up to Div 2 and I'd agree with that. Okay as a squad player but certainly not a first team regular if we are to be challenging. Can't see him getting a look in once we go back to 4-4-2.

Rubbish. We had a 3 man midfield. What space was there to exploit?

He chased the ball and harased the opposition. He made good tackles and completed his passes.

He did do all that was asked of him and you can't ask for anymore than that.

Well done Charlie.

Yes we did have a three man midfield, but you wouldn't have thought so at times. Rodger was particularly guilty of drifting at times.

If we're going to play three in the middle then we need someone who can be a bit creative. The only thing creative about Oatway is the way he's going to clatter a player.

No. Space was there sometimes because Oldham couldn't get past it so were forced onto the wings. Then the midfield supported Watson and Jones leaving one man in the middle.

We didn't play to be creative. Jones provided the only creativity really but Chippy and Rodger made their fare share of forward balls.

The point isn't that Oatway should be a regular this season. He should be comended though. He's worked hard pre-season, got his chance and taken it with both hands.

Well done Charlie (again)

Dammit, Turkey. We are exchaning opinions, which ultimately means that neither of us are wrong or right. Using words like those is not constructive.

I take what you're saying about Oatway and like I say, he did what was asked of him. My point is that we shouldn't be going out of our way to congratulate him on that fact. It's like we're making allowances for him. The player himself might even find it patronising.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. Feel free to call me a **** or whatever.

Don't see why you pulled that word out :jester:

He does deserve to be singled out because has made a special effort to get back into the team this year and had a good game.

I agree with Turkey here.

He did well and I'm sure he has been congratulated.

My opinion is he is not good enough for our team. But if Coppell picks he obviously thinks he is and I'd love him to prove me wrong.

Yes but the rest of the team only did what they needed to do. They looked like they where strolling at times!
But we won 3-1 so thats ok.

Nice game Charlie:clap2:

credits due to the man.

but, i feel he still lacks a little at this level. he very rarely actually wins the ball and passing can be erratic. id rather see harty, hammond, harding or piercy playing. all these players would add an extra dimension to the midfield. i.e getting in the box, foward runs etc.

he always gives 110% though and that has to be applauded.

Charlie did ok.As did the other 2 in the middle Chippy and Jolly but we didn't create enough or put their foot on the ball enough.
Agree with Safeway that if your praising Charlie because so many fans on here have been rubbishing him then that is patronising. If he is picked by Coppell as any other player then they should perform no exceptions.
Would you all jump to praise Butters if he played & just did ok ?

The point I'm making is that he came back to training early and obviously has made a real good effort to get back into the side. He's done whats been asked of him. Well done to him. It would be nice if some other players could do the same... David Lee.. Guy Butters.. John Piercy.. Pethick and Kuipers?

Safeway's edited his post with them quotes. I don't see the problem. Just arguing. It's not un-constructive is it?

I thought Charlie got better as last season went on. In fact, he was dropped after his best game in the defeat at Wimbledon. I think he is a sound Div 2 player and wont let anybody down. I really like the guy.
