Not read the article, but me and my family have chipped in for years. My sister does everything these days, just wouldn't be right if as well as having us all round it cost them hundreds.

Mrs V usually gets all the food and wine in for the family for Christmas... She then has to get " Contributions " with varying degrees of success from.the family. But, if she did not do it they would all sit on their hands.

My mum used to have 13 at the table on xmas day,worked 3 part time jobs and raised 3 kids.

Now there are no world records there,point is she never asked for a penny,she is sadly departed but that was when the world was a slightly better place.

I can see the argument for and against,it's not cheap to do,personally i would not ask either but then again i probably would not host 13 anyway.

My ex proposed charging our kids £15 for Xmas dinner, starting the year after she'd given them the choice about whether they wanted to spend Xmas with me or her and they chose me. I shit you not. Oddly, they've never spent Xmas with her since she mooted the idea. They're all arriving today, 2 with boyfriends in tow; it's going to be messy.

Start charging and your guests become clients and are entitled to expect certain standards (i.e. no soggy sprouts, rusty roasts, perfectly cooked meat etc etc etc). Any failure to meet these standards could result in complaints to the manager (), no tip for the staff or a bad trip advisor review!!

We had 24 family round for Xmas dinner a few years ago as the wife wanted one more Christmas with everyone knowing full well her dad wouldn't make another one. hired a marquee, tables, chairs, got all the food in from cash and carry, got the wines and beers roughly £500.

Never asked for a penny.


When all had gone we were clearing up and found an envelope with £200 in.

This, absolute tosh, family traditional meal has gone out of the window.
In my grandparents day, we all used to go round (about 12 people), with each family chipping in with certain items of food and drink.
Too commercialised I'm afraid.

I was referring more to women. Men can host for as many as they like and still not get all red faced and "look at me" about it. Women do seem to take it all a bit seriously.

Except for what I call the "now, this is how you cook a steak" type of man who cooks one big meal once every two months and insists he knows everything about food and cooking.
