I suspect "I want to vote for the other guys, but thry never gets enough votes so it's a waste of my time, I'll vote for one of the big parties instead" is a self-fulfilling prophecy. I think there are probably enough people in this position that if they all voted for the person they wanted to, they would not be 'the little guys' for very long.
I don't think the analogy works particularly well, at least not for most supporters.
Supporting a political party is part of means to the end of creating a well-governed country.
Supporting a football club is more like an end in itself.
Don't trust any of them, their only interest is themselves. To borrow a quote from a film "this president wants what every first term president wants ..... a second term". To get power and keep it is their only aim.
