CAMRA's Great British Beer Festival reveals this year's winner

Hobsons Mild has been crowned the 2007 Champion Beer of Britain at the Great British Beer Festival (GBBF).

The beer beat off stiff competition from contenders from all over the country to gain the prestigious title, which was judged by a panel of expert judges including Hamish Champ, city editor of The Publican and John Porter, The Publican's pub food editor.

Mighty Oak Maldon Gold, winner in the Golden Ales category, was awarded second place overall, and third place went to Green Jack Ripper, which won the Winter Ale category earlier this year.

The GBBF runs until Saturday at Earl's Court in London.

We have Harvest Pale in my local, pleasant enough, not sure it's the beer of the year though.

Good to see mild making a resurgence. It was dying out due to lazy publicans not wanting to deal with the fact that it doesn't keep well, but it's nice to see some people still prepared to make the effort. Well done them.

My thoughts exactly. I was at the festival last Tuesday afternoon and sampled the majority of the category winners. I found Harvest Pale to be somewhat lacklustre to say the least. Certainly drinkable, and not unpleasant, but there were far better beers on show to my mind.
