La Liga have handed out a fine to Celta Vigo for their low attendances at the start of the season. The club have recorded crowds of just 16,961 and 17,384 in their first two home matches so far at Balaídos Stadium, which has a 29,000 capacity.
The league rules that clubs have to fill a minimum requirement of 70 per cent of their grounds. As their numbers have fallen below that line, the authorities have decided to punish them.
The regulations came into effect this season that demanded sections of grounds which appear prominently on television must be fully populated by fans.
The unique move is in response to the growing popularity of the Premier League as the most marketable football league in the world.
Celta will be back at home tomorrow evening when they host 14th-in-the league Getafe. It is hardly the glamour fixture to lure the fans back, so the club will reduce prices in order to boost numbers.
It has been reported that the Marcador and Gol stands will have tickets available for €15 (£13.33), with the most expensive sets in the grandstand selling at €40 (£35.53).
Celta are 17th in the table after just one win in four games. They most recently suffered a 2-1 loss at Espanyol on Monday evening.
Barcelona top the table after winning all four of their matches. Unbeaten Sevilla are two points back in second place. Defending champions Real Madrid are fourth, three points off Barcelona.
