Just got my tyres done at autovets in Woodingdean and they seemed like a very professional outfit. They do a MOT and service for £119 and I reckon I'll be getting my service there when it's due.

Not Luton! Thank God
Not really being in the know about cars or mechanics I've never really understood what they do with a "service". Do they just check stuff? and how does it really differ from a MOT?

If I can't be arsed to do an oil change myself I take it to Grove Garage in Hove as they are a small indie Toyota specialist.

Full service:
All filters = Air,oil,cabin,fuel
All levels = antifreeze,screenwash brake,clutch,transmission & Change oil
Spark plugs
Check all lights and indicators
remove all wheels and perform brake inspection
perform underbody check for corrosion and check all coil springs, suspension arms, joints, boots and gaiters etc
An overall check of your vehicle basically. Obviously a lot of these things are checked during your MOT, Thats why a lot of places LOVE it when you book a service and MOT together as half the job is done during the MOT.

Just MOT only £39 quid.
Service, do yourself.
Buy an oil syphon pump, get some basic spanners, torx heads and socket set. Find out what sort of tool you need in your car to remove the oil filter housing or if its just a can, you might need a chain or spanner cup that fits over the filter.
Buy online for example ebay or go to Cliffords for your oil, oil filter, air, pollen and if you really want a fuel filter, Spark plugs if you have a petrol car.

Things like breaks and stuff all get checked with your MOT.

So once you've got the tools, find out your levels of ATF, steering, brake fluid and buy them if you need. Then
For my BMW for example and oil and oil filter which i do every 6 months costs about £30 inc vat.
For a full, Sparks, Oil, Oil filter, Air, Fuel, Pollen, and coolant, costs about £80 inc vat.

For a cheaper car, the costs reduce. Your main cost is the oil itself. Always buy good oil.

Do you stamp your own handbook as proof?

Do you stamp your own handbook as proof?

Well actually yes I do. I have a stamp that says home service with my name and telephone number. I keep receipts of everything I buy and keep a record of it. How do you know that a garage does half the stuff they say they have? I used to take an old ford focus to a garage years back (I won't say which one). I had a full service paid for and everything, itomised receipt etc. After about 3 weeks the car wasn't driving too well, I dont remember what was up. However, my father in law was visiting from Ireland and he checked everything, took out the sparks to check them and guess what? Old as anything, been in there for at least 20k miles! I went back to the garage and they said they must have 'forgotten' to change them.

So really if I do the service myself, I have receipts for everything, I'm hardly not going to put in the stuff I buy for the car. IMO its better proof than a garage. Not to mention the money I save.

Just paid £115 for an interim service & MOT at Hi-Q in Burgess Hill.

Always found them to be pretty good. I assumed it would need a major ("Gold" service) and went to book it, but the guy on the phone asked how many miles I'd done in the past year, and based on my response, then suggested I'd only need the interim (Silver) one. Would have been quite easy for him to just book the one I'd asked and make them a bit more money out of it.
