Capello is reported on Sky Sports as saying that "he is working in the worst conditions of any coach in Europe due to the lack of English players in the Premiership"

Last season there was an average of 4 English players per team, compared to 7 nationals in Italy's Seria A.

What a knobber.

If conditions were so bad, he didn't have to take the job, or the £5 million a year.

Twat.

He's just telling it how it is, not his fault you can't handle it

Yes, he knew the situation when he took the job so he can't claim it's a surprise. Doesn't mean he's wrong though, does it?

I hope that he has not just realised this.

If he's just stating facts, then you can't really fault him - he probably knew what he had on his hands to begin with too.
Public expectations and responses should be tempered by these facts though. A lot of people probably think we go in with some 'right' to succeed because we are "The Englerland".
Not to say that McClown was on any hiding to nothing.

However, having said that, it now illustrates that the squad almost picks itself by virtue of the limited number of English choices for each position. From there, it's up to the manager to ...manage, and figure out the tactics.
If Turkey and Germany can get so far on passion, organization and teamwork, then it's not simply about a plethora of big names, a luxury of choices.

Its a lame excuse in my opinion.

Look at Croatia, their top division is probably about the same level as our Championship yet they managed to qualify and have a good Euros.

The top 20 English players are man for man as good as a very very poor Italy squad than graced the Euros, and easily as good as the Germans on paper and they made the final.

Excuse me? I can handle it fine - I don't even think its a problem. As long as you've got 20 or 30 quality players to choose from, you're good to go.

It Capello who is suggesting he 'can't handle it'.

And this pathetic little nugget "working in the worst conditions of any coach in Europe " is hardly just 'telling it as it is' either.

The difference is that most of the Croatian team play in top clubs all over Europe. We seem to have a situation where we have a huge amount of foreigners here, but very few of our players go abroad.

I don't think he was using it as an excuse, just stating a fact.

And that fact seems to point to the fact that our top players are over-rated, over-paid and nowhere near as good as we think they are.

And the Germans? I believe many of their squad play in the German league, which is no where near as good as the prem , and man for man we have a much better side than they do. Chrsit look at how poor their defence was.

Greece managed to actually win the bloody tournament in 2004, is anyone suggesting they were better than us? Its about getting individuals to play well as a team, nothing more nothing less, and something that England have been incapable of since Bobby Robson was the boss.

I see that Capello has also said he will quit after the 2010 World Cup.

No he hasn't.
He has a 4 year contract taking him to 2012, which is "up for review" after the 2010 World Cup. All he's said is that this will be his last job, and he wants to make an impact at a World Cup.

Eurosport - Fri, 25 Jul 11:10:00 2008

England manager Fabio Capello has announced he will retire after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, two years before his contract expires.

Asked by La Repubblica newspaper to confirm that he would no longer coach after the World Cup, Capello replied: "This is certain."

The comment came after he ruled out a possible return to Italy as coach of the national team.

"My shift ends with England," he added. "My work on the field ends with the English experience."

He added that he would like to end his career by taking England to "among the top three in the world" in South Africa.

The 62-year-old, however, complained about the amount of talent at his disposal.

"I'm worse off than (Italy coach Marcello) Lippi," he said.

"In the Premier League only 35 percent of the players are English, while in Italy it is around 72 percent."

He also said that Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard should stay at the club amid talk of a possible move to Serie A champions Internazionale.

"As England coach I would prefer it if Lampard remained in England. He would have less traveling to do that way," Capello said.

BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | England my last job, says Capello

Fabio Capello has declared that his role as coach of the England national team will be his last in football.

The 62-year-old signed a four-year deal in January, although BBC Sport understands his contract will be up for review after the 2010 World Cup.

"I will complete my contract with England, but my time in the dugout will end with my England experience," he told Italian paper La Repubblica.

"However, I would like to end my career having made an impact at a World Cup."
