Why? Has someone lined Bernie's pocket and at whose expense?

The Canadian Grand Prix will return to the Formula 1 calendar in time for the 2010 season, Bernie Ecclestone has revealed.

The race had been due to be held at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve this year, but was omitted from the 2009 calendar after talks between Ecclestone and the circuit promoters broke down over financial terms.

However the F1 Chief Executive has been under severe pressure from both sponsors and teams to reinstate the race, due to the total absence of the sport from the key market of North America.

“I promise we will be in Montreal in 2010,” Ecclestone told Switzerland’s Motorsport Aktuel. “Everyone in Formula One loves the Canadian Grand Prix.”

Unfortunately for American fans, Ecclestone was less positive when asked about the possibility of a return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“Forget Indianapolis. We’re not going back there,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ecclestone also moved to assure the security of the British Grand Prix, claiming that if Donington can deliver “then we will be there – if not, then we will be staying in Silverstone.”

Ecclestone would be lynched if he got rid of the British Grand Prix

In the interview, he also ruled out a return to Indianapolis, which was dropped in 2007, and would like to add races in South Korea and India.

With the arrival of Force India and the rapid development there, India is a must for a GP soon. Not convinced about S Korea

Bernie Ecclestone might be saying Formula One will be returning to Montreal in 2010, but the mayor of the city says there is no deal in place.

On Tuesday, the Formula One boss told CBC News there is a deal in principle to have the Canadian Grand Prix return to Montreal for the next seven years. He hopes the deal will be confirmed in a few weeks.

But, according to RDS, mayor Gérald Tremblay released a statement saying the negotiations are still ongoing between the various levels of government and Formula One. The mayor also said the offer on the table is the same one from last autumn.

Ecclestone was also quoted in the Tuesday edition of Motorsport Aktuell magazine as saying "we'll be driving in Montreal again in 2010."

Shame that there is no USA F1

But Ecclestone had repeatedly said F1 did not need to race in the United States. He mentioned the possibility of moving the U.S. Grand Prix to New York or Las Vegas.

The 2.6-mile, 13-turn road course was built inside the speedway's famous oval to attract the F1 race.

Attendance figures are not released at Indianapolis, but estimates have been around 125,000 each of the past six years. The inaugural race in 2000 drew more than 200,000.
The event was marred in 2005 when 14 of the 20 drivers pulled off the track just before the start over concerns about the safety of the Michelin tires used by seven teams. Afterward, George refused to wave the checkered flag or join Michael Schumacher in the winner's circle.

Not much interest, they'd rather see cars going round and round on an Oval and there are no decent F1 American drivers either, which doesn't help.

But there is an American team next year, which is expected to have American drivers (dunno who though). Whether that will inspire the yanks to get into F1 remains to be seen.

Good news if true about Montreal!
No way Donington will be ready for next year. I was there a week or so ago for the MotoGP and with the exception of the access tunnel, nothing else is happening ... and they have less than a year to build a new bit of track and a whole pits complex .... no chance!

A Las Vagas street race would be cool. Imagine a F1 car going 200 mph down the strip.

There has already been a Grand Prix in Vegas. It's also considered the Worst Track Ever.

The Caesars Palace Grand Prix was a car race which was a Formula One World Championship event in 1981 and 1982. Nissan/Datsun was a presenting sponsor of both races.

When Watkins Glen went off the schedule after 1980, F1 continued to look west and put an event in Las Vegas for the 1981 campaign. The new race ended the year, whereas Long Beach started it, but it was not popular among the drivers, primarily because of the desert heat. The track was laid out in the parking lot of the Caesars Palace hotel and was surprisingly well set up for a temporary circuit: wide enough for overtaking, it provided ample run-off areas filled with sand, and had a surface that was as smooth as glass. Its counter-clockwise direction, however, put a tremendous strain on the drivers' necks. When Nelson Piquet clinched his first World Championship by finishing fifth in 1981, it took him fifteen minutes to recover from heat exhaustion after barely making it to the finish. The 1982 race was won by Michele Alboreto in a Tyrrell, but that was the end of Formula One racing in Las Vegas since the races had drawn only tiny crowds.

There have been speculative rumours of a return of a Las Vegas Grand Prix to the F1 calendar. In fact, the 1995 Indianapolis 500 program advertised a possible street circuit along The Strip, but it never materialized. After the 2005 U.S. Grand Prix at Indianapolis, rumors again circulated, however, it is one of many circuit linked with future races, and a strict limit on the number of races in a year means Las Vegas is not a favourite for a race.
