Unfortunately the country most likely to contract someone to check his brakes has just won the "competition". Which is a shame really because you know how bendy those mountain passes are......awfully long drops too.....

Some of the sour grapes on here are AMAZING! What makes you all think it was a divine right to host it anyway? Why did we have the best bid? Apart from the old lines "we invente Football" and "We already have the stadiums" what do the public know about our bid?

No-one's saying we have a divine right to host it.

FIFA invite countries to 'tender' for the right to host the competition and based on what we have heard fromk all the bidding countries, ours was far and away the best bid. We have the best infrastructure, the stadiums are already there, we would in all likelihood generate full houses for every game, we have the backing of the governement, the Royal Family and the public.

If this was ACTUALLY the case, then surely we would, and should, have won.

Unfortunately, it isn't exactly a secret that FIFA do NOT operate under those criteria. It's the country that wanks off the most delegates that wins.

The whole thing f***ing stinks.

We should resign from FIFA

Idiot. It's not that we've lost. It's we could never have won because the process is utterly bent. If you haven't understood this sentiment listening to all the phone ins etc tonight then you must be on another planet. Planet Fifa probably?

Sensible post that in many ways. We've been told the English bid got the best review, dunno how true that is.

Having reflected on not having a world cup on my doorstep, I am now personally much more fuming about the decision to award 2022 to Qatar. There is no argument for legacy, fan experience, culture or anything like that - just pure money.

I realise that this is all tongue in cheek stuff but as FIFA governs the world game any withdrawal from their control would result in sanctions no doubt. Could they not prevent any players from a country remaining under their control playing in England. Some might think this a bonus but it would affect the international popularity of our premier division and therefore the huge amounts of revenue it pulls in. In which case those that control our game wont let it happen. The only course of action is to gain control of the governing body - starting with the FA.

We have all been told of these FIFA voters doing the rounds and getting their pockets lined, lavish receptions, gifts and what have you ,AND we have lost the vote.

I suggested earlier an alternative World Cup,after we sort of fail to get to Russia, and putting on a show here at the same time.

Sadly,no other country would join in because they would be banished from the football family, cast into the role of Kerry Packer,Rugby League,or one of the smaller world boxing bodies.

English teams would see their foreign stars leave for Fifaland, and England would have to play, well,England. We would win our own world cup in the way that American baseball teams win the world championship by playing amongst themselves.

FIFA have us stitched up.Simple.

Unless they continue the policy of giving it to underdeveloped countries and Scotland get it we will never see the world cup played in these Islands again.

FIFA is not a democracy, it is the Fiefdom of Sepp, and surely most sane people can see that. What surprises me is that so many people deluded themselves into thinking England hat a cat in hell's chance of winning, they didn't. Sepp wanted Russia, as his 'legacy' of extending the WC to new frontiers. The snide comments about Russia are exactly the same as those in respect about South Africa this summer, and from my experience it was a wonderful WC, couldn't fault it.

I have worked there on and off for 15 years, it is a wonderful country. spectacular history and culture, and every hole is a certain goal with the Tatianas.

Some sensible posts are being made here showing a bit of perspective and not just "we're the home of football so we should have got it". Russia has never had the World Cup and has a football culture whatever is thrown at it in terms of racism and corruption.

To me, it's not the decision to give 2018 to Russia that stinks but Qatar in 2022.

A country without its own league and with absolutely nor sporting heritage.
I've heard the crap about air-conditioned stadia - very environmentally friendly.

But you can't cool down people walking to the stadia or every training pitch.

Unless the World Cup is switched to another time in the year, an absolutely scandalous decision.

I would agree that any journalists should expose FIFA if they can but breaking away and starting our own tournament? Has that really helped boxing's status?

I agree with almost all of this...f***ing foriengers have ruined our game with a few exceptions. Over paid players coming into the premiership my improve the league but they harm the England team. Overseas managers stop English managers climbing the ladder, we get f***ed by fifa...Lock the doors, we gave the world the game, lets take it back....Who would join us?....The French????

I don't think anyone said at any time we had a divine right to host it. In fact, as I understand it, the bid team went out of their way to avoid this specific accusation, and therefore make it the best bid. Which they did, by general consensus.

But that was not enough. To work that hard for five years or whatever and then be told in Blatter's final (shame it won't be) breath that it was always going somewhere new is sickening. There was no point, and the only reason I can see for why Fifa didn't make that clearer earlier is that 22 people have enjoyed a lot of freebies in five years from countries thinking they had a shout.

I can actually see Russia's case for hosting, it is a great country. Unfortunately they are also ridden with mafia involvement, and anyone who thinks they weren't involved at some level, be it constructing the stadia or whatever else, is just naive.

First of all, I made a packet by laying England to win on Betfair. They were 8/15 at one point which I couldn't get my head round. I never thought at any point we would win this.

That said, Taking emotion and national loyalty out of the equation, Do you really think our bid was worth 1 vote out of 21 (excluding ours) or that underhand dealing has not so much played a part but run the process? I know what my money is on.

As others have pointed out, the decision to award it to Qatar in 2022 is the biggest joke. No league, 40 degree temperatures, the list goes on. I can see a case for Russia but Qatar ahead of Australia is unfathomable.

We need to get Blatter and that twat Warner out. What really sticks in my throat is voting for Blatter at the last election and then going to T&T for a pointless friendly to whore ourselves to Warner - who we knew was bent long before this process started after he flogged a load of his tickets. what exactly was all that for? Nothing. At the very least I want to see payback for that.

Can we stop backing FIFA'S overseas projects? Ban any of our players in doing any of there work and if they do ban them for playing for England.

Never play T and T again

They could try but you can bet the EEC would go after them for restraint of trade, they don't have the right to prevent free movement and employment of individuals, only countries can do that.

Oh blah, blah, blah. FIFA are corrupt. What's new? Just because we didn't win a World Cup which we couldn't afford to run anyway and everyone's now up in arms? Its all very well leaving FIFA but then what? It'll just take us back to the 'holier than thou' attitude that has kept us out of the top of the game for the last 40 years. Sure, our club game is good but internationally we've been a laughing stock for years.

Certainly FIFA are rubbish as a governing body but, lets be honest, leaving is just going to look like sour grapes.
