Worthing
It says in this morning's paper that, if Sweden and Denmark manage to draw their match by 2-2 or greater, then they both qualify whatever the final score in the Italy v Bulgaria match. Is this correct (before I go to the bookies for a correct score bet)?

as 10cc say, not in hove
it is apparently correct and i've read this in several places. i really can't understand the logic though, since as they both drew with italy isn't it on goal difference then goals scored?

I don't understand this. Surely if Italy win 3-0 and the Swedes and the Danes draw 2-2 Italy will go through?

Maybe it's because it goes on performances against each other first. So if they're all equal on points a high draw between themselves outweighs the low draws that Italy got against them. Just a guess.

think it may have something to do with the 1.1 draw italy had with sweden. and the 0.0 with denmark. 2.2 obviously being a better result than both of these.

100% correct, goaes on results between sides drawn on points, all drew with each other, goal difference tied, goals scored is next. Sweden & Denmark drawing 2-2 outweighs their results against Italy.

Not at all. If Sweden and Denmark draw and Italy win - all teams are equal. The tiebreak rules come into effect...

If two or more teams finish level on points at the end of the group phase, these are the criteria which will be used to determine the final group placings:
1 Greater number of points in the matches between the teams in question
2 Goal difference from matches between the teams in question
3 Greater number of goals scored in matches between the teams in question
4 Goal difference resulting from all three group games
5 Greater number of goals scored in all group games
6 Coefficient derived from UEFA EURO 2004 and FIFA 2002 World Cup qualifiers (points obtained divided by number of matches played)
7 Fair Play ranking
8 Drawing of lots by the Committee for the European Championship only applicable if more than two teams are level

Rule 3 is where we would get down to, and given the below:

Italy 1 - 1 Sweden
Denmark 0 - 0 Italy

a result of:

Denmark 2 - 2 Sweden

would have both Denmark and Sweden scoring more goals than Italy in games between the 3 countries. It would not matter how many goals Italy score against Bulgaria.

However, if Denmark and Sweden draw 1 each, Sweden would still have more goals and go through. Denmark would have the same number of goals as Italy and then tiebreak rule 4 on overall goal difference would come into play.

would be nice to see italy go out.
even if i did tip (with my heart not my head).

england 1 italy 0 in the final.
that was before the tournament started.

Certainly didn't use your head - it was expected that if both teams progressed, we'd meet Italy in the semi-final!

(maybe not now though!)

Reading ferret on the official site looks like the bookies are on to this one and are only offering 5/1 ish. V short odds for a correct score prediction.
Can't see it happening myself - how could it work? Do nothing for 85 mins then each team just twats the ball in their own net twice? Reckon UEFA would have a couple of words to say about that.
