It could quite be celeriac but normally is seen wrapped in plastic without the leaves and tubers at the supermarket. Any allotment holders out there ?

celeriac is a form of celery which is a root vegetable. it is also known as knob celery.

Peel the root or bulb, wash it, shred it, in a bowl, add lemon juice, salt ,cracked black pepper,mayonaisse, eat it like coleslaw

Yes. Apparently boiling it in milk is best, as it can be quite bitter. Or roast it.

Maybe I'll cut it in half then. Use one half for this and the other for the gratin.

Probably the main reason we cancelled our weekly organic box from Riverford was that we seemed to get celeriac every bloody week.
