Any helpful tips?

Its going to be used for filming the little one as she grows up etc.

We want something good, probably more point and shoot.

Don't spend a fortune on one unless you are planning on becoming the next Steven Spielberg. £300-400 will get you a decent one, but you may find a few sale bargins below £300. Mini DV format seems to be the most popular at the moment and are great if you have a PC to hook it upto and edit your filming.

Mrs Bwian bought me a very nice Canon MV750i for Christmas and it got its first outing at the Tom Hark launch.

Nice widescreen full length stereo video of Tom Hark and GOSBTS and for my money the quality is superb! 22x Optical zoom and 440x digital zoom (waste of time imho).

I'm sure there are others that'll fit the bill too-Optical Zoom more important than the digital variety-as in Digital Still Photography.

make sure that it has DV in function so that you:
- download to your PC
- edit footage, add commentary (if you want)
- create movie

with dv in, you then have the option of saving the 'movie' back to dv tape (which is the best quality) to keep as a backup
