If the local butchers, greengrocers and cornershops weren't so bloody expensive. Dunno what it's like elsewhere in the country but Brighton loves to exploit it's citizens by charging a fortune for local produce and castigating us when they make it too expensive to buy. No wonder loads of these local shops are going down the pan, it's not just supermarkets that are ruining them, they do it to themselves.

My butcher is definitely not more expensive than a supermarket (not including heavily discounted deals) and his produce is FAR superior to the supermarket. Clark's on Lewes Road.

Admittedly I'm a pasty vegetarian plum but I defy anyone to spend a tenner on a week's worth of fruit and veg from the one up North Street at the front of the market, and the bloke and his wife are utterly brilliant. Open Market is nutsackingly cheap for cheese, eggs, fish, nuts and all that as well.

I sort of agree but when a convenience store is charging 2.99 for fish fingers they really aren't doing themselves any favours. The grocers here in Kemptown is outrageously priced. Definately not cheap by anyone's standards. I will agree though that most butchers are far better value and quality.

Those guys are excellent and their produce is really good especially the fruit they get in the summer.

Agree about the Open Market too. 6 large free range eggs are far cheaper there than at the supermarket.

Generally butchers, green grocers, markets etc are in fact cheaper than supermarkets for meat, veg etc. Supermarkets are much cheaper than the cornershop for branded goods because of their massive buying power. They also sell very cheap crap (as everyone now knows) which you cant get in your local butcher.

well it would be nice to have a nice Butcher etc around where we live or even a Farm Shop - not sure where the nearest within walking distance is as we live off Dyke Rd/Ave

The trouble is that the convenience store will probably be buying the same fish fingers for more than Tesco sell them at. Indeed I know someone in catering who buys all their stuff at Sainsburys because the cash and carry (which is where convenience stores have to buy their stuff from) is more expensive.

My local baker, on the other hand, is cheaper than any supermarket, and the product quality is much higher.

For some things that is definitely NOT the case. Fresh fruit and veg is usually MUCH cheaper at the local market, for example.

my local butcher buys in pre-cut, band-sawn, meat and knows about as much as I do. If I travel around 12 miles to the nearest old fashioned butcher I can get superb meat and because he only prepares what I want it isn't massively more expensive. Trouble is there is nowhere else nearby that I want to shop so the incentive has been reduced............until now

Quite. The food miles for supermarkets are horrific in comparison.

It is much easier to buy everything in one place (supermarket). I'm not too fussed about the price of things, supermarkets are just easier.
