I'm off to Bruges on Wednesday for three nights, any "must-see" tips or advice? I was thinking about a day trip to Gent while I'm there as it looks beautiful and I haven't really thought about much else.

Thanks!

Take a ride on one of the boats, you get a guided tour and they should point out a few good places to visit

Bruges is my favourite place I've been to in Europe so lucky you, just such a nice place to walk around (in the summer anyway :) ), bet it'll be nice if the Christmas market is on, and the church and the boat rides are fun. Ghent I went to once but didn't like as much as although the buildings were very picturesque it all looked a bit dirty (was a bad weather though so that might have been partially to blame. I seem to remember an impressive looking church though  And possibly a castle of some sort.

No sightseeing, just get drunk in t' brugs beertje.

Edit.... Actually the de Halve Maan brewery tour and lunch (flemish stew ) is good as well.

You can't throw yourself off the tower like he did in the film cos its all fenced off. Not that you were probably going to do that but ........in the film like.

I preferred Ghent myself. Definitely have a day there if you're doing 3 days. Excellent little bar on the canal in the centre. Forget it's name. But don't talk to people in french in Ghent. Bit of history there. They prefer you to speak to them in English.

Ghent in the rain I remember. Couple of nice large churches in a large square. Beautiful old houses/warehouses by the canal and a castle. And they have trams (if you're interested). Bruges should take up most of your time though.

Don't eat out at any of the restaurants on the main square....very, very pricey ! Loads of lovely places to eat and drink in the many sidestreets, at a fraction of the cost. The boat trip round the canals is a must, wrap up warm though !

Ghent, Belgium
I can vouch for Ghent, a cathedral, a castle and several beautiful churches along with many other historical buildings all in the town centre. Many cafe's with hundreds of different beers along the canal and on the 2 main squares and of course tourist boat trips.
The best time to be here is in July though, with the Jazz festival in the grounds of an old Abbey (not just jazz, we've had Madness, Joe Jackson, Van Morrison, Dr. John, Randy Newman, Marianne Faithful, The Neville Bros. etc. etc.) and of course the "Gentse Feesten" 10 days of constant beer and entertainment!
It's true that it's better to speak English than French here but strangely, in the local dialect all technical words i.e. tools and car parts etc. are in French.

Bruges is brilliant, just go there and enjoy it, no need to plan too much as it's small enough to stroll around.... If you did want a day out, you could do a lot worse than Antwerp which is another great city. Or even Brussels. Or Blankenberge if you want a cheesy seaside town. Belgium is much underrated, I've had many many great times there.

Many cafe's with hundreds of different beers ............ "Gentse Feesten" 10 days of constant beer and entertainment!

Trouble is those two statements are contradictory. The Gentse Feesten is a disaster zone for beer lovers, as I discovered when I accidentally mis-timed my trip down there this summer. Beer cafés like the Waterhuis aan de Bierkant and the Dulle Griet operate a greatly stripped down menu and hide their good stuff away from all the drunken slobs who come out of the woodwork for the occasion. And you can't even escape down the road to 't Brugs Beertje in Brugge as mentioned by Questions above - because the owner Daisy goes on holiday around that time and it shuts for a couple of weeks.

I love Gent and Brugge, but will be avoiding the Gentse Feesten like the plague in future...

Having been lucky enough to travel to many many wonderful places, Bruges rates as my favourite city break. Only drawback is it's expensive, but you can live on Moules, Frites and Lager if your budget is tight.

It really is a little gem and on Le Shuttle, less than 3 hours from Brighton when you drive just over the speed limit.
