the man appears to be playing chicken with his backbenchers now over this 42 day detention vote. but what amazes me is that he claims its a "principle" he has to stick too? wtf is the principle behind detention at all let alone a particular length?

so now he's back himself into a nice little corner. plank. :shootself

Perhaps it's me, but I feel as though we need to give the security services/police a bit of leeway on this one.

We all go about in our daily lives and take our safety for granted (I'm talking about accidents or the odd incident with violent people).

However, for us to have this, we need to give the people who are tasked with protecting the country the ability to do this. If this means that someone may be improsined for 6 weeks when they are innocent (or more likely, there's not enough evidence to prove charges against them), then sobeit. That's much more acceptable than the 'liberals' saying they got it wrong when hundreds or thousands are killed due to terrorists being able to carry on while being left at large.

Also, if evidence is obtained from phone-taps which haven't been approved, then I don't give a shit.

Last rant, all of this support for those "tourists" in Afghanistan that were in Guantanamo makes me sick. WTF, they knew what they were doing. The Yanks/Brits are posturing about invading to take out the Taleban and they decide to go for a 2 week summer vacation. Yeah, right.

Alan Johnson would be a strong contender. First saw him speak at a union conference in 1982 and thought he would be the future General Secretary of the UCW (now CWU) and go on to leading the TUC. However he opted to stand for Parliament and the rest is history , although now he takes a tough stance against the unions by being a Minister.

the thing is, if they havent got a case upon which to charge someone after a couple of weeks, then how likly are they in another month? they shouldnt even be arresting someone unless they have good suspicion and with that i expect some basic evidence to back it up.

if you think you have nothing to worry about, just remember that fella who was arrested at the labour party conference for heckling, under anti-terror powers. they could then have detained him for 42 days. no judge to approve, its down to the police chief and too open to potential abuse.

Worthing
Couldn't they be given it but with some parliamentary and/or judicial oversight?
